This is in RotK, when Gandalf and Pippin ride to Minas Tirith. As they arrive at the North gate of the Rammas Echor they are talking to some men of Gondor.

"Man!" cried Pippin "I am a hobbit and no more valiant than I am a man, save perhaps now and again by necessity."
"Many a doer of dreat deeds might say no more," said Ingold "But what is a hobbit?"
