I don't see a connection at all. I have no idea why Bakshi would think it significant to show that someone could resist the Ring; all that does is lend more credence to the 'Could Sam have thrown it in the Mountain?' argument. And PJ decided to show that not everyone could resist the Ring - though why he thought it was really extremely important is something I'll never fully understand.
