I think some of the best films I've seen have been "innacurate" or incomplete adaptations of good books (most of which I've never read, but have heard that "the book was way better"). So, I think that very often, in order to make a good film, you have to change things, even in a good book. But only if those changes make it better and make sense. For example, PJ making Aragorn a more obvious and central hero makes sense. Having him fall off a cliff and get kissed by a horse, however, does not seem to me to be an improvement... He's also taking cheap shots throughout the article, which isn't exactly going to make his position any better. Oh well...
