Well, I don't think Smeagol the Stoor picked up the One Ring and - POOF! - instantly became the bald, loincloth-wearing Stinker we all know and love. I would imagine that this is a pic of Smeagol undergoing a gradual transformation, perhaps after he has been cast out by his family and had been wandering in the Wilderness for awhile. <P>Maybe this is the moment when he decides to "take to the hills" and hide out under the mountains to escape from humankind and the skin-damaging rays of the Sun.
