I'm not nearly as familiar with ME mythology as the rest of you seem to be (

), so I'll keep it short. I think putting Sauron in 'storage' was the closest they could get to actually kiling him. He had put so much of himself into the Ring that when it was destroyed, he lost too much power to 'rebuild' a new body, much less his realm.
