Theoden had a nephew and niece remaining to him, Denethor a second son. Mabalar has neither, but he does have his relative youth and a wife with whom he could have more children. There are few things worse to a parent than losing a child, especially a grown one in the flower of youth. Bittersweet victory? More like a tragedy.
