Arwen instead of Glorfindel

It is strange that Peter Jackson should leave Glorfindel the Elf out of the movie entirely. Remember in the book, Glorfindel was the one who carried Frodo to Rivendell. In the movie it is Arwen who carries Frodo from the Nazgūl.

PJ reason (good or bad you decide) for this was that he wanted a bigger female role, and to set up the lovey dovey with Arwen and Aragorn. I personally Would much rather it have stayed, but what are u gonna do.

Glorfindel did not carry Frodo to Rivendell. He put Frodo on Asfaloth who took Frodo to Rivendell. Glorfindel stayed behind with Aragorn, Merry, Pippin, and Sam who eventually met up with Gandalf.
This topic has been discussed extensively in the Movies forum I'm sure.

If you had only finished the book, Ms. The Evenstar, you would know that Glorfindel was really Arwen disguised as a man-Elf, as a kind of sneaky foreshadowing of the Eowyn/Dernhelm scenario.

LoTR has dozens of characters and there is absolutely no way to make the movie comprehensible to the non-book reader and keep them all in there. The movies would just become a bewildering string of names and places.
For each character that was not integral to the plot (a group to which Glorfindel certainly belongs) the film makers have to justify their inclusion. Sorry, but just because they were in the book is not good enough. Some of these guys had to go.
Even the animated LoTR recognized this and replaced Glorfindel with Legolas. PJ wanted to expand Arwen's role (with good reason) so putting her in place of Glorfindel is a natural decision. Having her taking Frodo to the ford is a different question all together.
H.C.
[ April 02, 2003: Message edited by: HCIsland ]

I agree, HCIsland. There would be too many minor characters, which would lead to confusion. I mean, my mother confused Boromir with Legolas. Imagine what she would be like with more than one blonde elf to cope with!
But on the other hand the movie would have done better to create a more faithful adaptation and used Glorfindel (who happened to also be one of my favourite characters.
Of course, on yet another hand, Arwen was introduced, setting up the Aragorn/Arwen romance situation, which was a good part of the film.
[ April 02, 2003: Message edited by: Meela ]

I agree, too many minor characters and such would totally confuse those who have never read the books. I mean, I had not read them before FoTR, and I got totally confused myself! I thought the Witching had broken Narsil at one point! I also like that they evolved Arwen's character, adds more to her being just Aragorn's consort. And this goes past being "politically correct" or whatever, it's common sense to me. A women can be JUST as good a warrior as a guy.

I totaly agree Cibbwin! Girls are great fighters!(some of us are better than guys!) It's a shame that the women had to disguise themselves as men to be ALLOWED to fight,ya know. But I do think that they should have at least tried a little bit to put Arwen into her Glorfindel disguise thought.
