AIWENDIL: See him lament in confusion, and dine in confusion within.
NIENNA: Knights say it and a queen returns to reveal her. GILTHONIEL: Nimble dwarf transforms into her. EONWE: He disperses little to swallow a preposition. L: In turmoil, see poet trade for him. SALMAR: In him, a plosiveless hymn meets an automobile that won't start. Well done, Urwen! Just one to go.

Here we go:
1. Rosie's dad returns with a vowel switch. Just add #1 for her. 2. The Spanish extremity reveals her. 3. A car part turns for him - without hydrogen. 4. A handle of the sword meets a mythical creature. All is confused for her. 5. Shake up the Tajik monetary unit to reveal him. 6. Twisted hearing organ is surrounded by a signal for help; he should have used the latter.

3. ELWE? (Wheel minus H).
6. SAEROS (SOS around twisted EAR). Tajikistan has the SOMONI, but I can't get anything Tolkienian from scrambling that.

5. AMDIR, from diram?
1. NIMLOTH, from Tolma(i)n. Not sure how #1 becomes H.

I think Urwen means add one letter, which you did.

#1 means hydrogen as well. The first element on the periodic table. A trick used by Pervinca too, if I recall correctly.
NIMLOTH: Rosie's dad returns with a vowel switch. Just add #1 for her. 2. The Spanish extremity reveals her. ELWE: A car part turns for him - without hydrogen. 4. A handle of the sword meets a mythical creature. All is confused for her. AMDIR: Shake up the Tajik monetary unit to reveal him. SAEROS: Twisted hearing organ is surrounded by a signal for help; he should have used the latter.

NELLAS for the password.
4. LOTHIRIEL - HILT plus ... ORIEL? I only know ORIEL as a kind of window or an Oxford college, though. LALAITH ... HILT + ALA? GILTHONIEL ... HILT + GONIEL?

Well, I am pretty sure that none of those fit the theme...though Lalaith is related to three people who do and who could have been in the puzzle as well, had I not decided to use only elves...

2. ELWING: el + wing
Theme: perhaps something to do with living in Doriath? So perhaps LUTHIEN for the remaining one - though, HILT + ?UNE? ENU? UEN?

Nice one! The NIMLOTH one in particular was a great clue.
Good work, Galadriel, too! Here we go, then: 1. Without wheels, so to speak, see it shine. 2. He holds currency, though muddled and directionless. 3. Turn precedes a palindromic actress? Goodness, it’s hot! 4. Frodos Dreme? No, but it features heavily in at least one of his kinsman’s – take the fourth. 5. Something Bilbo would have seen, had they not been black. Take the second. 6. He sends no rugs back to the twin city? 7. An ocean! - Fingolfin’s squeeze, in turmoil, changes vowel on the first of November, and we see some – take the second one!

The AVA bit is right. Well done!
I have used 'turn' in the sense of a right turn or a left turn .... And the answer is not a name.

'Turn precedes' - so LAVA (which is hot)?
#5: As an entirely straight clue, this could be CAVES (or maybe TUNNELS), under the Misty Mountains; with the second letter being the password one. #4: Frodo's dream in Bombadil's house (and indeed Frodos Dreme) are about the Sea, but Merry (I think) dreams of WATER more generally, or perhaps a FLOOD (or indeed DROWNING, though that's a bit dark!). hS |

Frodos Dreme was just to put poetry into the clue. You're looking for something that Bilbo dreams of. Bilbo sees some things in Mirkwood when he climbs up into some trees, or is lifted up, (I forget which). They are ysually a differe.nt colour, but the ones he sees are black.

There are black squirrels and butterflies, but I thought Bilbo *does* see them.
(By the way, black squirrels are only a rarity in the Old World. On this side of the pond they're a daily occurrence.)

Yes, he *does* see them. I am referring to the variety of them that he *doesn't* see.

(Which would obviously be a reference to Ar-Pharazon, with the theme 'things found underneath mountains'. ) As for Bilboes Dreme - well, FOOD springs to mind after he got Bombur'd by Thranduil. I think he also dreamt of mountains; you say 'it', so maybe the LONELY MOUNTAIN. 6: 'Twin city' in Middle-earth would probably mean Minas Ithil & Anor, but my immediate assumption was Ankh-Morpork. ^_~ 'No rugs back' could mean there's a 'guron' in the answer, but that doesn't sound terribly Tolkien. 7: Uh... Fingolfin's 'squeeze' is presumably Anaire. Not sure other than that. hS |

You want a *particular* food that Bilbo dreams about. And a city that was *founded* by twins.

CARNIL for #1? Not sure how, except it's red and has "nil car" which may be stretched to having no wheels.
#2: DOLLAR - L = ORALD, but not sure how he fits the theme, except maybe via his yellow boots.

Good idea, but no. The ocean is the cryptic part of the clue.
What's TG? 'The Guide,' or something?

An ocean! - Fingolfin’s squeeze could mean literally 'the name of a sea, minus Fingolfin's wife'. 'MEDITERRANEAN' contains every letter in 'ANAIRE', and leaves 'MEDTERN', which is enough letters to anagram something. One vowel would need changing (maybe to 'o' from November, or maybe the vowel next to the N, or maybe you also need to add an N), and I guess we'd need to pluralise it...?
Or it could be LEAVES, based solely on the colour. (PS, Urwen: of course Middle-earth has pancakes...!) hS |
