So we can see it:

Idril for I, (see my edit, above).

HUINESORON! Would you like to write the next one? :)

You very nearly got my last one, and your thoughts paved the way for the right answer.

Yeah, but I didn't... :) Unfortunately I have a lot to do at work this week, so I won't have time to enjoy myself with passwords. Best to take it yourself, I think.

hS

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 02:18 PM

OK ... will you try to look in briefly and perhaps solve one or two, though? I have quite a special one that I've just written. :D

I mean in your lunch break or something ... not when you're supposed to be working!

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 02:22 PM

Though pedant proud this setter be,
To overload a clue, e’en she
Unwilling is, so therefore, peers,
For some of these, LOOK TO YOUR EARS! :-

1. Crossing where people eat their butties – before that is lost.
2. He’s a seafaring amputee! Ouch!
3. These elves (and the lost boys) adore her.
4. This pub has decidedly dodgy toilets.
5. Something you probably do if Rankin Bass orcs are driving you.
6. Wee dog loses direction, but prances and pivots until he’s found!
7. Distance a horse can travel on its posterior? Vowel shift! Here it is!
8. An unsung hero, because he evidently unblocked the toilet in Gondolin, even without being noted for it!
9. Dunno how this geezer keeps his specs on, or stops his helm falling over his nose!
10. Kanga’s baby’s bogies are projectile for him!

Urwen 06-05-2019 02:40 PM

For 3, I don't think Wendy has a Tolkien connection, unless I am dumb.

Urwen 06-05-2019 02:45 PM

And if theme is musicians again, which I think it is, then clue 8 points to Salgant. Now I only have to fit it in.

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 02:56 PM

What makes you think it's musicians? There may have been three Council ones, but there were only two Twin ones.

Urwen 06-05-2019 03:00 PM

So it's either Council members, or twins. Good to know.

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 03:06 PM

I take it that's sarcasm.

Just because there were 3 council ones, it doesn't mean there will be 3 musician ones. The council ones happened because my computer was down and I could not get at my stash of prepared passwords. Twin and musician research meant I had enough for two of each, and the aforementioned stash had by then been used up.

Urwen 06-05-2019 03:08 PM

The 7th clue puzzles me the most.

Urwen 06-05-2019 03:09 PM

For 2, if amputee is a Tolkien amputee, then it's either Maedhros or Beren.

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 03:11 PM

I'm not surprised! :D

But I'm not going to hand out hints this time. If do, I could give the whole puzzle away.

Or Frodo. ;)

But in fact, it is none of the three.

Urwen 06-05-2019 03:24 PM

Okay, so Rankin bass Orcs are singing, so SING.

Urwen 06-05-2019 03:29 PM

9. Tolma is elvish for helm. Add to that N for nose, and you get Tolman.

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 04:09 PM

No to both.

Just for clarification - I don't want anyone to risk their job! I mean, I'm addicted to this thread, but not *that* addicted!

Huinesoron 06-05-2019 04:15 PM

7... is a furlong measured by horses? Because BAMFURLONG is only a U off from the clue if so. :)

4... sigh. A FLOATING LOG, huh?

(And technically there's a Wendy connection in Tolkien... one of the early names he considered for Melian was Gwendoling or something like it. But I don't think it's relevant.)

hS

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 04:18 PM

Huey ... do you remember a previous clue that involved Wendy? :D

Tsk, Huinesoron. It's THE Floating Log!

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 04:25 PM

Though pedant proud this setter be,

For some of these, LOOK TO YOUR EARS! :-

1. Crossing where people eat their butties – before that is lost.
2. He’s a seafaring amputee! Ouch!

THE FLOATING LOG: This pub has decidedly dodgy toilets.

Furlongs are always being mentioned in horse racing. Especially 'the final furlong' in the Grand National.

From Google definition: "Old English*furlang, from*furh*‘furrow’ +*lang*‘long’. The word originally denoted the length of a furrow in a common field (formally regarded as a square of ten acres). It was also used as the equivalent of the Roman*stadium, one eighth of a Roman mile, whence the current sense. Compare with*stadium."

Not a horsey term in origin, then.

Urwen 06-05-2019 04:34 PM

3. Laiquendi

(All right, I cheated a bit by searching back.... :D)

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 04:39 PM

Correct, Urwen! As all the clues are in the last but one post, I'll just edit that one in.

...

Flipping heck ...how far back did you have to read? :o

Well, I used the search thread function.

Urwen 06-05-2019 04:42 PM

LL.....L

Is this a password comprised entirely of Ls?

Urwen 06-05-2019 04:44 PM

And how does the toilet factor into THE FLOATING LOG?

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 04:48 PM

Just keep guessing clues, and all will be revealed. :D

As for what a floating log has to do with a dodgy toilet ... do you really want to know?

Urwen 06-05-2019 04:51 PM

I want to know because if LOG is a toilet, then this points to either Galdor or Legolas of Gondolin.

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 04:59 PM

No ... a log is slang for a turd. I presume because it kind of looks like a log, just smaller. So if it's floating, the toilet is blocked (or some git hasn't flushed it).

You did ask. ;)

Urwen 06-05-2019 05:02 PM

So Turgon for 3 (TURD-D+GONE-E)

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 05:08 PM

Exactly!

The rhyme I put at the beginning indicates that it only needs to *sound* like 'gone.' But the 'note' thing was needed to get rid of the D, because that letter is not silent.

Oh ... did you think 'unsung' meant get rid of another note? Actually, that's so cool I'll pretend I intended it. :D I actually added 'unsung hero' as a wry joke about the heroic act of unblocking a toilet. I mean, what's the point of being a great elvish warrior if you can't deal with everyday, practical matters?

Urwen 06-05-2019 05:11 PM

Where there is a whip, there's a way
We don't wanna go to war today, but the Lord of the Lashes say 'nay nay nay'
We're gonna march all day, all day, all day
Where there is a whip, there's a way

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 05:22 PM

The whip is the crucial connection, but you also have to cross-reference this to orcs in 'The Hobbit.'

As Rankin-Bass also animated 'The Hobbit,' I thought this clue was defensible.

Urwen 06-05-2019 05:28 PM

Orcs in the Hobbit are called goblins. Relevant?
