#6 Firien Wood?

[ 3:16 PM December 01, 2003: Message edited by: Turambar ]

The Saucepan Man 12-01-2003 10:22 PM

Ahem! It seems that I cross-posted with Squatter, so my taunting was not entirely fair.

1. Bag End (Hole in bottom of sack.)
2. Olog-Hai (Superior troops may avoid being petrified in battle.)
3. Beorn (Magician found in Combe or near Archet.)
4. Doomed ocean fortress.
5. Evil one gives love-bite, by the sound of it.
6. Horse lord said to have come to an end at this place.
7. King reverses commercial edict.
8. A Hobbit who can take his drink?
9. Orrostar (Headless swordsman and main attraction from Eastern land.)

Three out of four, Squatter. And Brandybuck is very close for #8.

Still here, and relatively unflamed, Turambar. But I am afraid that Firien Wood is not correct.

6 - Wold? Eorl's Easterling end...

Celebrian, welcome to the 'Downs! Enjoy decay!

8. Oldbucks?

Is password acquired in the normal fashion?

Turambar 12-02-2003 09:11 AM

# 7 Walda ?

The Saucepan Man 12-02-2003 10:19 AM

Nope, not correct I'm afraid, Celebrian and Nilpaurion. Turambar, however, has come up trumps this time:

7. Walda (King reverses commercial edict.)
8. A Hobbit who can take his drink?
9. Orrostar (Headless swordsman and main attraction from Eastern land.)

#6 Paths of the Dead ?

Celebrian 12-02-2003 10:42 AM

#5 - Niggle?

Aiya, Nilpaurion Felegund! I bend a courtesy/curtsy to thee.

Usta Salque 12-02-2003 11:44 AM

is #8 a Took?

The Saucepan Man 12-02-2003 05:16 PM

No, no and no.

Welcome to the Downs and to the Quiz Room, by the way, Celebrian and Usta Salque. I hope that you enjoy yourselves here. I moderate here and in the Quotable Quotes forum so, if you have any questions, feel free to PM (private message) me.

What?! You just violated 17 international treaties on "Password" games!

My guesses, right.

6. Aglarond or Helm's Deep? How about Paths of the Dead or Dwimorberg?

Finwe 12-03-2003 11:56 AM

4) Himring?

The Saucepan Man 12-03-2003 05:50 PM

Good answer, The Laurenendorian, but it's not the one that I'm looking for. The actual answer is not so clever - it's more of a pun.

So sue me.

Still not there on #6, Nilpaurion. You're all thinking too literally on this one.

Himring's not correct for #4 either, I'm afraid, Finwe. This one requires a bit of translation.

Carry on solving, folks ...

4. Umbar!
5. Shelob?
6. Vales of Anduin???

[ 8:57 PM December 04, 2003: Message edited by: Nilpaurion Felagund ]

The Saucepan Man 12-04-2003 08:22 PM

Keep guessing.

Nilpaurion Felagund 12-06-2003 05:21 AM

No way! Umbar is not number 4's answer?

Anywhen...
4. Lond Daer?
5. Gothmog?
6. Calenardhon? or Rohan?
8. Rorimac? or Old Rory?

Finwe 12-07-2003 03:01 PM

4) Eambar?

The Saucepan Man 12-07-2003 07:57 PM

No. None of those are correct, I'm afraid.

I'll repeat the clues here for ease of reference:

7. Walda (King reverses commercial edict.)
8. A Hobbit who can take his drink?
9. Orrostar (Headless swordsman and main attraction from Eastern land.)

And now some more hints:

#4 is not a place. Finwe was on the right track with Eambar.

#5 is a bit silly, but what title for an evil one might sound like someone who gives love-bites?

#6 is the name of a horse lord, not a place where one died. The second part of the clue is cryptic.

As for #8, the correct hobbit's surname, and his grandfather, have been given. I'm just looking for another name for him - one that fits in with the "punnish" clue.

Hope that helps.

Double aaah! 6 is Dunhere!!!

Triple aaah! 8 is Holdwine!!!

Quadruple aaah!!! The password eludes me!!!

What method of encryption did you use, Sauce? C'mon, tell us!!!

6) Herufara?

The Saucepan Man 12-08-2003 10:20 PM

Well done, Nilpaurion. Your frustration has not been in vain.

1. Bag End (Hole in bottom of sack.)
2. Olog-Hai (Superior troops may avoid being petrified in battle.)
3. Beorn (Magician found in Combe or near Archet.)
4. Alcarondas (Doomed ocean fortress.)
5. Evil one gives love-bite, by the sound of it.
6. Dunhere (Horse lord said to have come to an end at this place.)
7. Walda (King reverses commercial edict.)
8. Holdwine (A Hobbit who can take his drink?)
9. Orrostar (Headless swordsman and main attraction from Eastern land.)

So that just leaves #5 and the small matter of the Password. It's not Aldudénië I'm afraid, Arestevana.

It's a tricksy one.

Nilpaurion Felagund 12-09-2003 03:02 AM

I can't find the password: My knowledge of Tolkien's mythos is not yet complete. But to end Sauce's reign of terror , I'll share my ideas.

1. At first, I thought that the second to the last letters form the password. They now form this: NARA_NDRA. No word like that, right. What if you reverse it? ANDR_ARAN. Nothing formed still...

2. Then, I realised that maybe the *fill appropriate adjective* Sauce had used some form of step thing. The most promising? NANO_RAIS. Don't know what that means...

Wait...is the password SIRANNON?

The Saucepan Man 12-09-2003 04:30 AM

Nope. All should be revealed if you get #5 ...

Finwe 12-09-2003 12:18 PM

5) Vampire?

The Saucepan Man 12-09-2003 01:08 PM

No, not a Vampire. But where does a vampire ususually bite his or her victims? The answer sounds like someone who might administer a love-bite there.

Turambar 12-09-2003 01:17 PM

He he - the Neck-romancer.

Celebrian 12-09-2003 01:21 PM

5 - Not Tarlang's Neck? Oh, well then

Is the Password Nob ?

<font size=1 color=339966>[ 2:45 PM December 09, 2003: Message edited by: Celebrian ]

The Saucepan Man 12-09-2003 05:18 PM

Bingo! Solved at last.

1. Bag End (Hole in bottom of sack.)
2. Olog-Hai (Superior troops may avoid being petrified in battle.)
3. Beorn (Magician found in Combe or near Archet.)
4. Alcarondas (Doomed ocean fortress.)
5. Necromancer (Evil one gives love-bite, by the sound of it.)
6. Dunhere (Horse lord said to have come to an end at this place.)
7. Walda (King reverses commercial edict.)
8. Holdwine (A Hobbit who can take his drink?)
9. Orrostar (Headless swordsman and main attraction from Eastern land.)

The Password is indeed Nob (the answer to the question posed by the first letters of each answer). Well done, Celebrian. The thread is yours.

Nilpaurion Felagund 12-09-2003 07:12 PM

Edit: A poser-poesy-posey for you as "winter first begins to bite":

One, Gondorian grouping, Butterbur drooping
Two, a monster cache, a place of doom
Three, at this age what angst a tweener would be suffering?
Is four a mound, or stone, a place for bones?
A fifth, a time to be mead a-drinking
The sixth is where there lived an Inkling.
Seven's a remedy for overheating.
Evermind Guess eighth and poser end is soon,
For it is a burial bloom.

Celebrian 12-10-2003 02:29 PM

No, Sir Saucepan, but you have down the theme for Four.

Turambar 12-10-2003 03:03 PM

#2 Great Hall of Thrain ?

#4 Barrow ? Or Stone of the Hapless ?

Celebrian 12-10-2003 03:21 PM

No and no, but you've got the right theme.
