No. It's something the whips make driven prisoners *do.*

Urwen 06-05-2019 05:32 PM

Is what you do 'whip out Beater'.

Beater was wielded by Turgon himself in the olden days, and there is a theory that his nephew made and wielded Orcrist.

Pervinca Took 06-05-2019 05:32 PM

Because we're on a new page:

Though pedant proud this setter be,

For some of these, LOOK TO YOUR EARS! :-

1. Crossing where people eat their butties – before that is lost.
2. He’s a seafaring amputee! Ouch!
LAIQUENDI: These elves (and the lost boys) adore her.
THE FLOATING LOG: This pub has decidedly dodgy toilets.
5. Something you probably do if Rankin-Bass orcs are driving you.
6. Wee dog loses direction, but prances and pivots until he’s found!
BAMFURLONG: Distance a horse can travel on its posterior? Vowel shift! Here it is!
TURGON: An unsung hero, because he evidently unblocked the toilet in Gondolin, even without being noted for it!
9. Dunno how this geezer keeps his specs on, or stops his helm falling over his nose!
10. Kanga’s baby’s bogies are projectile for him!

Good idea, but no. You want a verb. One word.

Look at the song the goblins sing to their chained prisoners.

No. And not cower, either. ;)

Urwen 06-06-2019 02:07 AM

They say 'and a whip and a crack'.

Urwen 06-06-2019 02:10 AM

Or do you mean that 'you go down to Goblin Town'.

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 02:10 AM

Look at the song in 'The Hobbit.' When the dwarves are chained together in the cave, and the orcs are whipping them down to Goblin Town.

The Rankin-Bass reference was just for humour and the 'whip' connection.

EDIT: Yes to your last post/question.

Urwen 06-06-2019 02:14 AM

So is that the answer or do we need to condense it.....?

Urwen 06-06-2019 02:15 AM

I think 6 is one of those clues, and Miniature mutt gives us Minyatur.

Huinesoron 06-06-2019 03:44 AM

6 makes me think of Roverandom, but I'm not sure we can do anything with that.

1: A butty is a sandwich (usually as 'chip butty' in my experience). Hmm... a sandwich is also a sarnie, so that suggests SARN FORD. You lose 'i.e.', which kind of fits with '- before that'.

9: This must be a name with 'ear' in it (for the specs), but EARENDIL doesn't seem to fit. EARNIL = ear + nil (= none), so that would work.

5: could this simply be FALL?

hS

Urwen 06-06-2019 04:14 AM

I don't thing fall is the answer, for it has nothing to do with the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogTDa-vG2MQ

The lyrics are listed here, too.

So what might you do if that's being sung at you? There's a fair few verbs mentioned (and a few more in the poem it comes from), but nothing jumps out as being anything other than a verb; no place- or person-names.

GO is the most repeated one; there's no other verbs unambiguously directed at the captives in the song ('batter, jabber' could be). In the poem, both 'work' and 'shirk' are, and arguably 'pound'.

Or it could be synonyms, which is where fall came into things (as a synonym for descend, go down, &c).

SARN(IE) FORD: Crossing where people eat their butties – before that is lost.

10. Kanga’s baby’s bogies are projectile for him!

One more correct answer so far.

The verb you want is kind of similar to jabber and batter. Closer to jabber, I would say.

The dog element is not the *name* of a dog. It's a synonym, but 'mutt' is the wrong synonym.

WHOOPS! SORRY! EARNIL IS CORRECT TOO! WELL DONE.

Urwen 06-06-2019 06:02 AM

Kanga's baby is Roo, but what are bogies?

Urwen 06-06-2019 06:06 AM

jabber=rumble, mumble, gab, murmur, mutter, yap, yak, blather, ramble, utter.

Huinesoron 06-06-2019 06:07 AM

Either YAMMER or BLEAT might work, then; I have an inkling it might be the former.

hS

Urwen 06-06-2019 06:07 AM

dog=pup, cur, hound?

What you get in your nose when you're ill. I'm assuming it's a word containing (starting with?) RU, but while there's a handful of Hobbits who do, along with of course Rumil, I can't fit the rest of the clue.

hS

Urwen 06-06-2019 06:13 AM

Russandol might work there (RU+NASAL) or something

Huey's inkling is correct.

Kanga's baby is indeed called ROO. Don't change the spelling.

I think bogies are called boogers in North America.

One of Urwen's dog synonyms is right.

Urwen 06-06-2019 06:24 AM

Urwen 06-06-2019 06:26 AM

Seafaring is either marine or maritime. Amputee probably means 'loses an arm'. If we remove 'arm' from these, we get

I N E

I T I M E

Urwen 06-06-2019 06:27 AM

2. Maitimo?

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 06:28 AM

SILLY CLUES it is! :)

Urwen, I've never heard of Maitimo. But more to the point, there's no C in it.

Huinesoron 06-06-2019 06:53 AM

It's Maedhros' mother-name.

Speaking of Feanorions, has Urwen already guessed CURUFIN for the C clue? CUR + (FINE - E) [for 'wee, small'], with a U for 'pivots', ie U-turn.

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 06:55 AM

Urwen, the answer to clue 2 is not a million miles away. :)

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 06:57 AM

CUR is right, but Curufin is not.

Why not?

Because your reasoning is simply not silly enough.

Curumo? (Sounds like 'curly moe')

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 07:01 AM

Sillier than that. (Or at least, more puerile).

EDIT: Very close, though.

Urwen 06-06-2019 07:04 AM

Does it start with CUR, at least?

CUR + URINE - E(ast) = CURUNIR.

I searched for seafaring amputee, and all I got was this puzzle, so I still don't get it.
