You've got it!
ERESTOR: To revive, counsellor's end becomes new beginning. LEGOLAS: Building blocks? Near-maiden? Isn't he obvious? VORONWË: Wander at this time, in turmoil, to find lost sailor. EÖL: Feline is confused- but he is dark and perilous! SERINDË: Meanwhile, antelope's cousin is tumbled about and suffused with evil. (No wonder she has a death wish). Over to you.:) |
Here you go ...
1. Is he just a mixed up loser?
2. Material for a sailor’s headgear, inspired by Eighties pop icon? 3. Chaotic rain reveals her. 4. Cattle sound changes vowel: spin and see her fly! 5. More agile blow in a whirl here. 6. Ancalagon’s brass instrument? A substance for a sailor’s weapon. 7. Sounds like a sick sailor, without hesitation. A lofty place, indeed. 8. Makeshift dwelling and large river combine for a maiden. |
I think #3 and #4 are RIAN (anagram of "rain") and ELWING ("lowing" with altered vowel)? And is #8 LUTHIEN ("hut" + "Nile")?
|
And #1 is ELROS (anagram of "loser").
|
But what is with all the sailors?
Is the answer by any chance EÄRENDIL? |
Elros: Is he just a mixed up loser?
A: Material for a sailor’s headgear, inspired by Eighties pop icon? Rian: Chaotic rain reveals her. Elwing: Cattle sound changes vowel: spin and see her fly! N: More agile blow in a whirl here. D: Ancalagon’s brass instrument? A substance for a sailor’s weapon. I: Sounds like a sick sailor, without hesitation. A lofty place, indeed. Luthien: Makeshift dwelling and large river combine for a maiden. Correct! Earendil is both password and theme. And I think you've answered your own question. ;) I know Luthien is only his grandmother-in-law, but I preferred it to another answer that was closer to Earendil but would only fit in backwards. |
As I thought...
Then is #2 ADAMANT? (Eärendil's helmet. As for the other part- wasn't there somebody in the Eighties called Adam Ant?) #5 must be NIMBRETHIL ("nimbler hit"), and I believe #7 is ILMARIN ("ill mariner" - "er"). And finally I guess #6 is DRAGON-HORN. Nice clues!:smokin: |
Well done!
Elros: Is he just a mixed up loser?
Adamant: Material for a sailor’s headgear, inspired by Eighties pop icon? Rian: Chaotic rain reveals her. Elwing: Cattle sound changes vowel: spin and see her fly! Nimbrethil: More agile blow in a whirl here. Dragon-horn: Ancalagon’s brass instrument? A substance for a sailor’s weapon. Ilmarin: Sounds like a sick sailor, without hesitation. A lofty place, indeed. Luthien: Makeshift dwelling and large river combine for a maiden. I made this password because I was peeved at not being able to fit more stuff from the Earendil song into my last one. ;) Well done, Nerwen! Over to you again. :) |
And apologies once again! Things keep happening! I should really prepare some in advance...
1. Only a third of a league- must be shuffled to see heavenly object. 2. Two of me, and nothing? Confusion becomes astronomical. 3. Resistance may be futile... but sounds like this alien race is in poor health. 4. Troubled crimson outsider becomes celestial symbol of hope. 5. Amphibian is brilliant after dark. 6. Two birds mingle with jovial results, then run backwards. 7. Insulted and confused veterinarian becomes stellar hunter. 8. Sounds like you're in a bad place- but when you put it all together, quite the opposite. |
This comes at the right time ... on a coach to Devon and we are stuck in stationary traffic.
Weeeeeeelll ... I think they're all stars or heavenly bodies. But unfortunately I can't solve any of them! I think no. 1 has 'mile' in it. There should be a constellation called Elimmere (mere for only). But there isn't. |
3. Borgil - ill Borgs?
|
ELEMMÍRË: Only a third of a league- must be shuffled to see heavenly object.
2. Two of me, and nothing? Confusion becomes astronomical. BORGIL: Resistance may be futile... but sounds like this alien race is in poor health. Pervinca, you guessed close enough on #1 that I've decided to give it to you. (Elemmírë is a star, or possibly a planet). |
4. Earendil (alien + red)?
And Elbereth for password? Which makes 8 Helluin (hell you in)? |
Yes to all three.
ELEMMÍRË: Only a third of a league- must be shuffled to see heavenly object. L: Two of me, and nothing? Confusion becomes astronomical. BORGIL: Resistance may be futile... but sounds like this alien race is in poor health. EÄRENDIL: Troubled crimson outsider becomes celestial symbol of hope. R: Amphibian is brilliant after dark. E: Two birds mingle with jovial results, then run backwards. T: Insulted and confused veterinarian becomes stellar hunter. HELLUIN: Sounds like you're in a bad place- but when you put it all together, quite the opposite. |
Telimektar was a name for Orion the Hunter, but I've no idea how to get the separate elements ... the nearest I can get is 'rail' for 'insult.'
|
You're on the right track, but that's not the name I'm looking for- it's a similar one, however.
|
There's another T in the heavens. A sometimes crescent-shaped one. But I can find even less of insult or of vet in that one!

I am quite happy to give further hints if anyone wants them...

Hints, please. :)

Well-
#2 is literal- two of [a word equivalent to "me"] and [a word equivalent to "nothing"]. #5. You're looking for a word for a type of amphibian... which also happens to mean something else in Middle-earth. #6. The answer- which I'm afraid is pretty obscure- is an anagram of the names of two birds, and is reversed. However, I acknowledge that's not all that helpful, as after all there are a lot of bird species. One is also a synonym for a type of machine, the other means "to flinch". An important part of the clue is the word "jovial". For #7, I suggest you look at the first page of The Lord of the Rings: Appendix E: Writing and Spelling:Proununciation of Words and Name:Consonants. (The clue part is a sort of unkind way one might describe a vet- rather silly!) |
I think one of the birds is a QUAIL. I guess I need a synonym of jovial which has those letters, then to work backwards and find the other bird.
|
Is there something like Linuil in ME? I kept fiddling with nill, but now I realized it could be null too for nothing.
|
I was trying that too - I x 2 plus nil or nul.
|
There is something *like* it, yes...
|
I think these might be the missing answers.
Luinil - anagram of I twice and null - one of Varda's stars Rána - A frog genus and also a name for the moon Elerrína - anagram of rail and erne - a name for Taniquetil meaning 'crowned with stars'. Telumehtar Anagram of mutt healer - a name for the constellation of Orion. |
Welcome, Squatter! And you got three out of four right!
ELEMMÍRË: Only a third of a league- must be shuffled to see heavenly object. LUINIL: Two of me, and nothing? Confusion becomes astronomical. BORGIL: Resistance may be futile... but sounds like this alien race is in poor health. EÄRENDIL: Troubled crimson outsider becomes celestial symbol of hope. RÁNA: Amphibian is brilliant after dark. E: Two birds mingle with jovial results, then run backwards. TELUMEHTAR: Insulted and confused veterinarian becomes stellar hunter. HELLUIN: Sounds like you're in a bad place- but when you put it all together, quite the opposite. Pervinca was correct with "quail" as one of the two birds. |
By the way, I actually thought of #5 because I was listening to loud nocturnal croaking at the time. Lots of frogs around here (though not actually of the Rana genus).
|
Ta muchly. I was going to leave those for someone else, but the crossword was too easy today. Clearly frogs greet the moon as their distant relative. I must look into that one day.
If we're going down the backwards road, an anagram of quail and crane is Alcarinquë, the most jovial planet. Reverse it and you get ëuqniraclA. Is that what you were looking for? |
That's it. Well done!:)
ËUQNIRACLA: Two birds mingle with jovial results, then run backwards. TELUMEHTAR: Insulted and confused veterinarian becomes stellar hunter. HELLUIN: Sounds like you're in a bad place- but when you put it all together, quite the opposite. |
So, I guess it's Galadriel's turn?
Excellent password. (I think I needed to be 200 miles closer to my HOME collection, though!) |
Good timing!
This falls on my one true day of vacation, meaning I don't take forever to make one. A couple of these were also a good chuckle to make, and hopefully to solve. Here goes.
1. I hear insect and a brief alarm. A broken piece? 2. Sounds like boat took note and tumbled into the ocean. 3. Left tribesman from the East – whoops, West. 4. Look thus, pointless confused maia reflection! 5. Behold after Downer flows. 6. Sailor confused awful moon. 7. Boy greets short conjunction in haven. 8. Right, same tribesman from the East, and this time actually East. |
Is 5 Gwathlo - Gwath (agor) +lo (behold)?
|
Ah ... I was trying -lo but only knew Ringlo.
|
6. AERANDIR? (Dire + Rana). Friend of Earendil the Mariner.
If so, a guess at BELEGAER for the password? (A name on my mind because I was trying it for the 'ocean' clue). |
All correct!
1. B I hear insect and a brief alarm. A broken piece? 2. E Sounds like boat took note and tumbled into the ocean. 3. L Left tribesman from the East – whoops, West. 4. E Look thus, pointless confused maia reflection! 5. GWATHLO: Behold after Downer flows. 6. AERANDIR: Sailor confused awful moon. 7. E Boy greets short conjunction in haven. 8. R Right, same tribesman from the East, and this time actually East. |
Is 8 RHUN? (R + Hun?)
And therefore LHUN for 3? |
Could 4 be OSSE backwards, hence 'ESSO?'
Look = see. Thus = so. Lose one of the compass points (an E). |
All correct. Typing on phone, will update list when have computer.
