No, just making it a bit more challenging, (and resorting to semi-desperate measures to get the required letters).

As we're on a new page ....

MAURA: Find him circulating at a strange support group.
ERESTOR: Put back, almost intact, to find him.
TELCONTAR: A twist of double pastry for him.
THARKUN: Search around the ship for him.
GLORFINDEL: Coin in German money? Shake it up for him.
GLOIN: Behold, spirit! Turn and see him!
GALDOR: For him, a happy alternative, with minimal compromise.

THEME: PEOPLE PRESENT AT THE COUNCIL OF ELROND.

Maura it is (as in Maura Labingi).

I hadn't noticed the juxtaposition of rum and AA! Yes, that works. But it's simply that 'rum' is a word meaning strange. Circulating, not strange, was the anagram indicator.

And Tharkun *could* be found on the ship west, but I didn't realise that when I used ARK and hunt to produce the clue.

Over to Urwen! :)

Urwen 04-18-2019 10:38 AM

Here is another themed one inspired by Pervinca's.

1. Note a befuddled entrance for him
2. A pronoun sits in the middle of a fork for him
3. A metal and an animal surround a headwear in turmoil for him
4. Hindu religious teachers, befuddled, for him
5. A haze and a bar come together in a spin for him
6. Crazy bloomer surrounds a note, in a spin, for him

William Cloud Hicklin 04-18-2019 10:52 AM

4. SAMWISE, from "swamis"

Nope, but close. Very very close...

Galadriel55 04-18-2019 11:26 AM

Frodo then? Door + F?

Just a guess: FRIEND? (Pairs of friends?)

....Are you a mind reader?

FRODO: Note a befuddled entrance for him
R: A pronoun sits in the middle of a fork for him
I: A metal and an animal surround a headwear in turmoil for him
SAMWISE: Hindu religious teachers, befuddled, for him
N: A haze and a bar come together in a spin for him
D: Crazy bloomer surrounds a note, in a spin, for him

Pervinca Took 04-18-2019 12:02 PM

Could the N one be FINGON? (FOG + INN).

No, not a mind reader ... Galadriel and William had done all the work up to then!

But you solved it based on only two letters.....

Pervinca Took 04-18-2019 12:07 PM

Ah, so is it a MAD ROSE rather than a flower anagram? MAEDHROS, Fingon's friend? H isn't a note, though ....

William Cloud Hicklin 04-18-2019 12:08 PM

D would be Fingon's BFF MAEDHROS, assuming one uses German musical notation (H for B, where B = our B-flat): MAD + H + ROSE

EDIT: cross-posted with Pervinca

But I was very, very lucky that one of the letters was the first one, and the two names already solved make up the most famous friendship Tolkien ever wrote about.

Urwen 04-18-2019 12:12 PM

Well, it is a note, just not a standard one. :p

I: (Beleg) CUTHALION: Cu (copper) + HAT + LION

That would make R TURIN: I inside TURN

Urwen 04-18-2019 12:40 PM

Done.

How was it? I admit it's not at Pervinca's level, but I try.

William Cloud Hicklin 04-18-2019 01:02 PM

Very good- with the quibble that "swamis" doesn't have an E in it.

Well, it says that the word can also be spelled 'swamies' somewhere, so I went with that.

Pervinca Took 04-18-2019 01:11 PM

It was excellent, Urwen. You're becoming a dab hand at these! :)

Ty. Looking forward to your next one. :)

William Cloud Hicklin 04-18-2019 01:17 PM

OK, I'll take a shot

1. To rescue him, you must cut a group of terrorists off at the knees.
2. Voicing a depressive ***, a voiced rune? [OK, donkey. Bloody forum software]
3. A German pursues a backwards revolutionary, in front of his defense.
4. Spanish gold leads to a confused forum topic, not an article.
5. Our German mumbles "Lieber G---" but without energy

Urwen 04-18-2019 01:19 PM

It's Pervinca's turn, actually, unless they wish to give it up....

Pervinca Took 04-18-2019 01:19 PM

Whoa! Hang on. It's the person who guesses the password that has the next go!

That said, I don't mind. Let it stand.

William Cloud Hicklin 04-18-2019 01:23 PM

Sorry, should have read the rules

Pervinca Took 04-18-2019 01:25 PM

4. Orodreth? Oro + thread - a.

Urwen 04-18-2019 01:26 PM

In that case, I'll take the backseat and let Pervinca solve this one so that they could take their rightful turn.

Pervinca Took 04-18-2019 01:29 PM

No, no! I have had lots of turns. And I can't solve all that on my own!

Urwen 04-18-2019 01:32 PM

5 looks like some variation of Liber + Gott.....

Pervinca Took 04-18-2019 01:34 PM

Maybe with Unser for German 'our?'

Pervinca Took 04-18-2019 01:36 PM

I have an idea number 1 might begin with CEL, because a group of terrorists is a cell.

Urwen 04-18-2019 01:40 PM

Celeborn for 1 then? Cel+borne?

William Cloud Hicklin 04-18-2019 01:54 PM

First points to Pervinca!

1. To rescue him, you must cut a group of terrorists off at the knees.
2. Voicing a depressive ***, a voiced rune? [OK, donkey. Bloody forum software]
3. A German pursues a backwards revolutionary, in front of his defense.
ORODRETH: Spanish gold leads to a confused forum topic, not an article.
5. Our German mumbles "Lieber G---" but without energy

[How do you generate colored text here?]

William Cloud Hicklin 04-18-2019 01:58 PM

No, 1 isn't Celeborn. Sorry.

Pervinca Took 04-18-2019 02:15 PM

Eeyore is a depressive donkey!

Anyone know of a rune that sounds like Eeyore?

There's a Viking rune called As/Oss, but that doesn't really get me anywhere.

Eeyore sounds like IOR, which begins the name IORHAEL, or IORLAS (or, indeed, IORETH), but I don't think that's what the clue's asking for either. Unless there's a rune called HAEL?
