I had hoped to prank you with my last puzzle, but you outplayed me. *bows*

Huinesoron 06-07-2019 03:39 AM

Spot on for 6. 2, yes (with 'mae' sounding like 'my'). 1 I can't give you; you only got half of the clue right, unless you can clarify why 'briefly a ring-slinger, is attending' comes out as LING.

(I'll tell you now that anagrams are only involved in one clue.)

1. M?????? - West, briefly a ring-slinger, is attending.
2. MAEGLIN - Sounds like my smile goes from right to left.
3. ??E???? - One step on from a dwarf impaled by two thirds of a spear.
4. ???G??? - No light, and it sounds like no Hell either; it's all backwards!
5. ????L?? - Mother jumbled up the marbles.
6. MAEGLI? - A crazy omlette row? Never let it end.
7. ??????N - Take elements of two backwards countries, then add Earth (well, stone) and Air.

4. (gleam+n)?

Urwen 06-07-2019 03:57 AM

7. Gem+A, with Lin as backward countries, but which ones?

That looks like you've just taken the first two words of the clue (and still ended up missing a letter). Can you find an answer that makes use of the entire thing?

Oddly enough, you've split the clue correctly, but gotten the two halves of the clue attached to precisely the wrong halves of the answer. :)

Take backwards countries, then add Gem and A.......

Urwen 06-07-2019 07:00 AM

No Hell sounds like 'no L' or 'N L'.

Er... no. I meant:

' two backwards countries | Earth (well, stone) and Air' == 'maeg | lin'

Hey, it kinda does!

Ma and Eg for Armenia and Georgia, backwards, and Li from Lithos for stone, and N from Nitrogen.

I'm gonna give you that one. I was actually looking at elements for all four: Am is Americium, while Ge is Germanium. Li and N exactly as you said.

6. MAEGLIN - A crazy omlette row? Never let it end.
7. MAEGLIN - Take elements of two backwards countries, then add Earth (well, stone) and Air.

Four answers to go. What could they be?!?!?!

'dwarf' confuses me.

Urwen 06-07-2019 07:38 AM

Spear could be JAVELIN, and two thirds of that is 'LIN'.

Funny how he too was gonna be impaled by a spear if it weren't for his 'ma'.

Urwen 06-07-2019 07:40 AM

5 is MA+ELGIN

Urwen 06-07-2019 07:46 AM

For 1, LING comes from SLINGER

Uh... 'LIN' would be three-sevenths of 'JAVELIN'.

“Good heavens!” growled Beorn. “Don’t pretend that [Huinesoron]s can’t count. They can."

It is! And the only anagram in the set.

1. M?????? - West, briefly a ring-slinger, is attending.
2. MAEGLIN - Sounds like my smile goes from right to left.
3. ??E???? - One step on from a dwarf impaled by two thirds of a spear.

I can see what you're going for, but 'briefly' means you're looking for an acronym for something indicated by 'a ring-slinger'. And then there's a third part to the clue.

Urwen 06-07-2019 08:07 AM

1. Mae+gl+in?

Urwen 06-07-2019 08:10 AM

Spear comes up as GAR, and two thirds is GA, but there is only one anagram per your words, so that can't be it.

Yes (can you explain why?).

Both 'a dwarf' and 'a spear' are specific entities, not general concepts.

hS

Urwen 06-07-2019 08:54 AM

Then dwarf is Mim and the spear is Aeglos. One points to first letter, and two-thirds of Aeglos is AEGL. Impaled means inside, or in.

Or in other words, M+aegl+in

Urwen 06-07-2019 08:56 AM

Ring-slinger points to Green Lantern, which is abbreviated to GL. Attending is in, and we both know what first part of the clue means.

That works. I was going with AEGL inside a word one letter on from Mim, so MIN.

Entirely correct; I now want to see a movie about Dr. Mae West, Green Lantern of Sector 2814.

1. MAEGLIN - West, briefly a ring-slinger, is attending.
2. MAEGLIN - Sounds like my smile goes from right to left.
3. MAEGLIN - One step on from a dwarf impaled by two thirds of a spear.
4. ???G??? - No light, and it sounds like no Hell either; it's all backwards!
5. MAEGLIN - Mother jumbled up the marbles.
6. MAEGLIN - A crazy omlette row? Never let it end.
7. MAEGLIN - Take elements of two backwards countries, then add Earth (well, stone) and Air.

Just the one to go! The word 'backwards' may help you here.

hS

Urwen 06-07-2019 09:04 AM

Light could be 'GLEAM', except it reads MAELG backwards instead of MAEGL, and you said no more anagrams.

Huinesoron 06-07-2019 09:14 AM

I did indeed say no more anagrams. Maybe apply some more backwards instead?

hS

Urwen 06-07-2019 09:18 AM

So we need to apply LG backwards too? But even then, it still lacks IN.

Unless we switch NO to German, for NEIN, and cut it in half......

So if we remove L from GLEAM, we get GEAM, which is Maeg backwards. Then we add LI as in light, and N for No.

Urwen 06-07-2019 01:51 PM

Bad Huinesoron. Very bad. Tempting me with the character I care about the most and then vanishing......:(

Huinesoron 06-07-2019 02:08 PM

It's allllllllllll backwards. Not just part of it. Allllllll. [Spooky hand gestures]

(seriously just write his name backwards already)

hS

Urwen 06-07-2019 02:33 PM

All right

Nilgeam. (Maeg+Li+N backwards)

Good enough for you?

Huinesoron 06-07-2019 02:45 PM

1. MAEGLIN - West, briefly a ring-slinger, is attending.
2. MAEGLIN - Sounds like my smile goes from right to left.
3. MAEGLIN - One step on from a dwarf impaled by two thirds of a spear.
4. MAEGLIN - No light, and it sounds like no Hell either; it's all backwards!
5. MAEGLIN - Mother jumbled up the marbles.
6. MAEGLIN - A crazy omlette row? Never let it end.
7. MAEGLIN - Take elements of two backwards countries, then add Earth (well, stone) and Air.

Theme: MAEGLIN

Nil = none. So Nil Gleam = no light. Sounds like no Hell = no L, so Nil Geam. It's all backwards = Maeglin.

And so it is over to you.

In spite of what he's done
I still cherish him, even if I'm the only one

For I feel sorry for him, and this is true
And there's no one else I can turn to.

Anyway, this puzzle is titled 'Urwen's Revenge'.

1. She is endlessly full in reverse, with German one spinning.
2. The largest Australian lizard goes in circles and gains direction.
3. Turn a class of vertebrates around. Shorten England.
4. A compound and an element spin together, chemically speaking
5. Deceive, according to number. It's all jumbled up.
6. A scheme changes vowels and a wheel cover gains one, in a muddle
7. A hormone and a lake without eye. It's all broken.
8. Elite skill in a daze.
9. A Tree changes a vowel.

I remember hS saying he'd thought of making all the answers Maeglin, but I thought he was joking! That was BRILLIANT!

...

Can someone explain to me what a ring-slinger is, and the element it gives to that clue?

...

Urwen, most of your new clues don't seem to contain a straight element?

Urwen, most of your new clues don't seem to contain a straight element?

That's because they don't need one. The first clue does, and that's enough for this set. Urwen's revenge, remember?

And ring-slinger clue indicates Green Lantern, abbreviated to GL.

Aldor from alder, then? :D

(Just kidding).
