BELEG - Speaker of a spell: "Become a limb!"
OUTLAWS - The opposites of your wife's parents are wicked.
3. - A son named his father, but hesitated at the beginning of the world.
4. - A tasty king.
5. - Sounds grim, heir to the house.
6. - Before the road, a woman can go back and forth and seem fair.
7. - A confused alien with a Greek eye, and the first High King? I'm seeing red.
8. - In the shadows, hear me initially name my ideas for a villain.
9. - Muffin lost his tail, found a big stick, turned around and went down into a cave.

11. - A cat in eyeshadow definitely can't fly, but...
12. - The wretched band with an icy world covered in glitter.
13. - The Elvish fingermarks left by the childlike, or close enough for the youngest.
14. - Take a note at the top of the park, direct to the start of the word, and hide from him.

Yes. That, and the two answers we already have are both connected to Turin, as is Thingol. Plus, LOG backwards is in his name, which fits with the 'big stick' part.

That is the correct interpretation of the big stick part, but this character has nothing to do with Turin. :)

Urwen 07-14-2022 03:49 PM

Well, I cannot understand the Muffin part.

Pervinca Took 07-15-2022 12:04 AM

Just had a thought - it's not Muffin the Mule, is it?

Or maybe a near-synonym of muffin, like bun.

GOLLUM? MUL + LOG. Just noticed that he turns around. And he lives in a cave.

Before I noticed that he turns around, I found out that Tolkien created an early language called MAGOL, which was quite like Hungarian.

Pervinca Took 07-15-2022 12:24 AM

12. I am going to try RINGIL, Fingolfin's glittery sword.

'Wretched band' made me think of the One RING, so I went to look for things starting with RING and found out that RING actually means 'cold, icy.'

Unless it's RINGLO, the cold river. RINGIL has a stronger or known glittery connection, though, even though rivers can glitter when the sun shines on them.

Galadriel55 07-15-2022 04:00 AM

Wonder if 6 is ANNATAR, because the pallindromic Anna cag go back and forth, and he did seem fair.

It is both Muffin the Mule and Gollum!

Neither of these; the band is not a ring.

This is right; 'road' = tar(mac).

7. It's something to do with 'something+Finwe', and if the alien is Mork, I am thinking of Morifinwe, aka Caranthir the Red.

Pervinca Took 07-15-2022 05:15 AM

Maybe 12 starts with GAURWAITH

It is a something-finwe (but frankly that's half the First Age), but the alien is not Mork, nor is there actually a "the alien". (But red is indeed a descriptor of the person.)

7. Greek word for 'eye' is Mati, so then this is Maedhros?

Urwen 07-15-2022 06:27 AM

And 3 is then Curufin, because he technically did name his father, as they have the same name. :p

:D Okay, right character, wrong name. I didn't know that Greek - I was making a cross-lingual pun on i grec. And since you'd get it as soon as you remembered the -finwe, I'll just fill in alien > alyen > Nelyafinwe on your behalf. :)

It is not. Also, you want the father's name, as used by the son (once).

I'm afraid I'm not, at all. I just saw Urwen's guessing of the password, took the initial from her, then saw 'shadows.' And I'm not convinced I'm right even then!

Is the tasty king NOM? (Finrod).

Nooo..... Hui, this is next level passwording and punning... And I mean that as the highest possible compliment. It is bloody ridiculous, and I absolutely love it. But OMG tasty Nom - well, the werewolf must have thought so... Oh my gosh...

ETA: for #8, is it possible it's a combo of the two elements? Shadows + enemy = DARK FOE, aka Morgoth.

ETA #2: for 13, going purely by letter and theme, I would hazard Ernil i Pheriannath as the youngest.

Huinesoron 07-16-2022 03:22 AM

Wow, a lot of good replies here! Let's goooo!

"Prints of the Halflings", but in Elvish. :D

So after all that, let's see what we got!

BELEG - Speaker of a spell: "Become a limb!"
OUTLAWS - The opposites of your wife's parents are wicked.
UMARTH - A son named his father, but hesitated at the beginning of the world.
NOM - A tasty king.
5. D - Sounds grim, heir to the house.
ANNATAR - Before the road, a woman can go back and forth and seem fair.
NELYAFINWE - A confused alien with a Greek eye, and the first High King? I'm seeing red.
DARK ENEMY - In the shadows, hear me initially name my ideas for a villain.
GOLLUM - Muffin lost his tail, found a big stick, turned around and went down into a cave.
10. A - Link up and profit in a break in the sun.
11. G - A cat in eyeshadow definitely can't fly, but...
12. G - The wretched band with an icy world covered in glitter.
ERNIL I PHERIANNATH - The Elvish fingermarks left by the childlike, or close enough for the youngest.
14. D - Take a note at the top of the park, direct to the start of the word, and hide from him.

All answers come in pairs; I'll dig out the quotes when we finish, but:

Beleg - Outlaws
Umarth (Hurin) - ???
Nom (nomnom) - Annatar (Thu/Gorthaur/Sauron)
Nelyafinwe (Maedhros) - Dark Enemy (Morgoth)
Gollum - ???
Ernil i Pheriannath (Pippin) - ???
??? - ???

5 could be Daur, which sounds like 'dour'.

Pervinca Took 07-16-2022 04:15 AM

That would make Grishnakh and Gorbag contenders as hobbit-binders. Frodo was only bound in the earlier drafts, but I'm taking 'Bound and Gagged' as a metaphorical expression for 'captured.'

Urwen 07-16-2022 04:20 AM

11. Is Gothmog (GOTH+MOG)

Pervinca Took 07-16-2022 04:34 AM

Gollum was bound by ANBORN, (perhaps), but he was bound AND gagged by ARAGORN.

Both have ANOR for sun.

I am convinced that "icy world" is Hoth, which offers words like GAURHOTH and GLAMHOTH. I am betting on the latter, as Pippin's capturers, and very glam with glitter. But why wretched? Or is this specifically regarding Ugluk&co, who met a sour end?

Pervinca Took 07-17-2022 04:31 AM

Wretched band of orcs, who end up dead.

Pervinca Took 07-18-2022 07:29 AM

The question is, who beginning with D captured Frodo?

Damrod guarded him awhile, along with Mablung, but does the name work?

DAUR *has* to be right - it fits the clue so well.

Well, 'gagged' is for the words, but 'bound' is 100% literal. (Also neither of those are in the password.)

Oh yeah, Melkor swings both ways. ^_~ I know it meant repeating a character, but I figured it was acceptable under the circumstances. An(gain)or and the Park Word it is.

DARK LORD - Take a note at the top of the park, direct to the start of the word, and hide from him.

So there it is - the Bondage in Middle-earth password, as requested. Everyone say thank you to our participating couples (and, er, multiples?):
  • Beleg & Outlaws: "Then he bade them tie Beleg to a tree outside the cave; and when he was hard bound hand and foot they questioned him." [Unfinished Tales]
  • Umarth (Hurin) & Gothmog: "Then Gothmog bound him and dragged him to Angband with mockery." [Silmarillion]
  • Nom (nomnom) & Annatar (Sauron): "Lo! sudden there was rending sound / of chains that parted and unwound, / of meshes broken. Forth there leaped / upon the wolvish thing that crept / in shadow faithful Felagund..." [Lay of Leithian]
  • Nelyafinwe (Maedhros) & Dark Enemy (Morgoth): "Morgoth took Maedhros and hung him from the face of a precipice upon Thangorodrim, and he was caught to the rock by the wrist of his right hand in a band of steel."
  • Gollum & Daur (Frodo): "`All we need is something to keep a hold on him,' said Frodo. '... Tie one end to his ankle, and keep a grip on the other end.'" [Two Towers]
  • Ernil i Pheriannath (Pippin) & Glamhoth (Orcs): "For the moment Pippin was unwatched. His legs were securely bound, but his arms were only tied about the wrists, and his hands were in front of him." [Two Towers]
  • Dark Lord (Melkor) & Angainor: "Melkor took refuge in the uttermost pit. Then Tulkas stood forth as champion of the Valar and wrestled with him, and cast him upon his face; and he was bound with the chain Angainor that Aulė had wrought, and led captive..." [Silmarillion]

Over to Urwen!

Gah! When Dark Enemy first popped up, I thought it was referring to Morgoth and the Angainor - but then assumed I was just wrong about that pair when he was paired up with Maedhros, and just never returned to it.

I loved that password, Hui. It is creative and hilarious. It's amazing that you managed to find so many first letter clues too. It's actually quite remarkable how many people were bound at one point or another (as to who bound Frodo - Shelob did, I kept trying to force her into the password too!), and, ME kinkiness aside, it's such a ridiculously wonderful theme, and so well done. I still can't get over Nomnomnom. Tasty Elvses!
