None of the above. :D

symestreem 02-24-2004 01:47 PM

5) Esse? It is the Quenyan word for name; Quenya is high elven; a name is a title.

Finwe 02-24-2004 02:07 PM

5) epessė?

High Elven (Quenya)

title (an epessė often described what a person did or a defining characteristic ex. Gil-galad)

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-25-2004 01:28 AM

Don't ask...just don't ask.

4. Istari.

The Saucepan Man 02-25-2004 11:02 AM

Nope!

Keep guessing! (Now, where's that evil smiley gone ...)

Turambar 02-25-2004 01:08 PM

Can't be right

Evisse the Blue 02-25-2004 06:13 PM

Is the Password Valaquenta ?

Finwe 02-25-2004 08:06 PM

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-25-2004 08:20 PM

Is the Password Valaquenta ?
Indeed it is, Evisse, so your up next. Well done. :)

But first #s 4 and 5 remain to be guessed, so here's a hint for each:

#4 is cryptic. The straight clue is "poorly".

#5 is the title of an individual Elf (and two non-Elves too), although it's not an Elvish word.

:smokin:

Finwe 02-26-2004 11:24 AM

4) Nob?

5) Tall?

The Saucepan Man 02-26-2004 07:12 PM

1. Valacirca: Bringer of a heavenly harvest?
2. Langflood: Commonly said to be the longest bearer of the One Ring.
3. Quendi: Named speakers.
4. Remove first letter of alphabet poorly.
5. Tall: Lofty Elven title.

Correct on #5, Finwe. The Elf was Maedhros. :)

#4 shouldn't be so difficult. How many words are there for alphabet in Tolkien's works? And how many of those words make another Tolkien-related word when you remove the first letter? ;)

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-26-2004 11:55 PM

There are only so many words that begin with "en"...

Hmm...

Tengwar(rune) - [its initial letter] = Engwar(sickly). Another word for Men.

In case you didn't notice, this isn't the Rebus thread.

Shut up, Adam. Alter-egos, jeez!

The Saucepan Man 02-27-2004 08:13 AM

That's the one!

1. Valacirca: Bringer of a heavenly harvest?
2. Langflood: Commonly said to be the longest bearer of the One Ring.
3. Quendi: Named speakers.
4. Engwar: Remove first letter of alphabet poorly.
5. Tall: Lofty Elven title.

Evisse the Blue 02-28-2004 03:41 PM

Yep, Turambar, those are the ones, well, actually the Elvish equivalent of those. But not to worry, I'm not that nitpicky, so I'll add them.

5) Finrod? Sauron? Luthien?

(The clue seems to be talking about the singing duels between Finrod and Sauron or Luthien and Sauron.)

Nirvana II 02-28-2004 04:38 PM

for #5 uhhhhh........Sauron?

Evisse the Blue 02-28-2004 04:54 PM

Nirvana II - #3 was aready guessed.
Finwe - you're on the right track, just think on a lower scale.

Finwe 02-28-2004 05:07 PM

Umm... ok... it has something to do with singing then...

Aragorn? (He was singing when he met Arwen.)

Evisse the Blue 02-29-2004 12:38 AM

Nope. Not singing and not Aragorn.

1. IthilThing that starts a sword's harmless touch comes out at night.

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-01-2004 02:08 AM

Another one of those off-target shots...

Is the password Thorin? :)

Evisse the Blue 03-01-2004 02:45 AM

That's a hit! The password is indeed Thorin, so you can start preparing the next mind game.
In the meantime, there's still #4 to be guessed.
