Turambar 09-14-2005 04:33 PM

1. Ents - Guardians sent hither and thither.
2. Stone of the Hapless - One that took her whom he shouldn't as lover
With the one who bore him, do I cover.

3. Gwindor - Like roaring wind or waves he charged and fought.
4. Angrist - Beheaded fellow, with grain for Sandyman, made a damaged weapon.
5. Ravenhill - Professor Spooner remembered this place as Shelter-Brook, though in truth one may be visited by birds there.
6. Orcrist - Alternatively that Old English poem would make a mighty sword.
7. Thingol - "Nothing old can stay," as the poet said, and so he proved.
8. Hithaeglir - Eighth lair about the mighty peaks.

The Perky Ent 09-14-2005 04:36 PM

1. Istari?
2. Um...for some reason, i'm gonna guess Huan

Turambar 09-14-2005 04:40 PM

No and no.

All the clues are cryptic, except perhaps #2.

Good luck. http://forum.barrowdowns.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif

The Perky Ent 09-14-2005 04:53 PM

Hmm...did you just change the first question? No matter...

These are so wrong, but...

1. Argonath?

The Saucepan Man 09-14-2005 05:45 PM

Quote:

1. Guardians sent hither and thither.
Rangers? Guardians who range here and there.

Quote:

4. Beheaded fellow, with grain for Sandyman, made a damaged weapon.
Angrist. Man minus his head plus grist (to the mill).

Quote:

5. Reverend Spooner remembered this place as Shelter-Brook, though in truth one may be visited by birds there.
Ravenhill. Haven-rill said by the aforementioned Prof. Spooner.

Quote:

8. Eighth lair about the mighty peaks.
Hithaeglir. Anagram of "Eighth lair".

Turambar 09-14-2005 07:38 PM

Saucepan Man's ## 4, 5 and 8 are correct. http://forum.barrowdowns.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif

NightKnight 09-15-2005 11:16 AM

2. Turambar?

Turambar 09-15-2005 01:00 PM

Turambar is "the one" referred to in the first line, but the answer is the one who speaks "I cover".

Firefoot 09-15-2005 01:47 PM

2. Hurin?

Turambar 09-15-2005 02:07 PM

No. I apologize for the doggerel: the answer is that which covers me ( ;) ) and the one who bore me.

NightKnight 09-16-2005 10:57 AM

The Stone of the Hapless?

Turambar 09-16-2005 11:33 AM

Excellent job! http://forum.barrowdowns.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif

NightKnight 09-17-2005 03:38 PM

7. Thingol?

Is the Password Esgaroth?

Turambar 09-18-2005 06:42 AM

Yes and yes. Good job.

E: I've edited the clues slightly.

The Squatter of Amon Rūdh 09-24-2005 04:03 AM

The final clues solved

1: Ents

3: Gwindor. "Like roaring wind or waves...". He did indeed fight at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

6: Orcrist. Crist (Christ) is actually three poems, which cover major episodes in Christ's involvement with mankind: the Advent, the Ascension and the Day of Judgement. Christ I, actually a number of separate lyrics, may have been written by the poet Cynewulf; Christ II is signed by him, and Christ III has been argued to be his work, although this is a bone of scholarly contention.

Turambar 09-24-2005 12:26 PM

All correct, and thanks for the info on Crist. Crist, I believe, is where Tolkien saw the word earendel and was inspired to write a poem about the voyage of Earendil.

NightKnight is up next.

Quote:

Eala Earendel engla beorhtast,

and sodfasta sunnan leoma,
tohrt ofer tunglas žu tida gehvane
of sylfum že symle inlihtes.
