2. Orofarne.

I figured out the theme. :D

Pervinca Took 02-19-2023 12:19 PM

1. Hey diddle diddle, this earth’s in the centre.
OROFARNE: Sandwich a cookie unevenly around a nasally altered farm and see what springs up.
3. They’ll soothe a sore throat, if the liquid is changed.
4. After hesitation, the fairies’ midwife married him.
5. Christmassy, but dangerous here.
IN: What knights say, if you play the tape backwards.
7. A drummer loses nothing, but hisses for them.
8. A singer from the Seventies – hoping to sound like this?
TROLL: He’s much nicer when he joins forces with a Moomin.
10. Whether sweet or salt, it cools a hot mouth.
I: Simply the first person.
12. You tie one, K? (Take that away).
ELVEN-KINGS: Almost a dozen monarchs have lost their way.
14. Of French blood?

Well done. Have an oreo! :D

Urwen 02-19-2023 12:21 PM

14. Sang?

Yeah, I got nothing when it comes to the rest of these.

Pervinca Took 02-20-2023 04:49 PM

Do G55 and Huey have any ideas?

Galadriel55 02-21-2023 09:34 AM

Best I have is RINGS for 7: Ringo - 0 + SSS. I would need some hints for the rest.

A hint? RHYME, more than riddling, should be applied to the first clue. ;)

And 4 is cryptic, but quite easily so.

Urwen 02-21-2023 11:23 AM

Hey dol, merry dol, ring-a-ding dillo
Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!

Huinesoron 02-21-2023 04:23 PM

Is 1 literally just MIDDLE (-earth)?

For once I got the Shakespeare in #4 unprompted - the fairies' midwife is Queen Mab. But I can't do anything useful with Ummab or Ermab.

And ERMAB is *most* of the answer to number 4.

Galadriel55 02-21-2023 07:56 PM

I feel like ERMABWED is not much of an improvement either. :D

Why isn't it?

Sorry, it was RINGS, (as you rightly guessed), not Ringo.

Because it's a distressing-looking nonsense wo--

Gnomish, Pervinca? What did we do to have Gnomish inflicted on us? ;)

(It means "One-handed", for anyone who doesn't want to check. Early version of Erchamion.)

'More first lines' for the password?

Pervinca Took 02-22-2023 04:05 AM

MIDDLE: Hey diddle diddle, this earth’s in the centre. (The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins)
OROFARNE: Sandwich a cookie unevenly around a nasally altered farm and see what springs up. (O Orofarne, Lassemista, Carnimirie!)
R They’ll soothe a sore throat, if the liquid is changed.
ERMABWED: After hesitation, the fairies’ midwife married him. (Light as Leaf on Lindentree)

F Christmassy, but dangerous here.
IN: What knights say, if you play the tape backwards. (In Dwimordene, in Lorien)
RINGS: A drummer loses nothing, but hisses for them. ('The Lord of the Rings' / Is one of those things)

TROLL: He’s much nicer when he joins forces with a Moomin. (Troll sat alone on his seat of stone)

L Whether sweet or salt, it cools a hot mouth.
I: Simply the first person. (I sit beside the fire and think)
N You tie one, K? (Take that away).
ELVEN-KINGS: Almost a dozen monarchs have lost their way. (Three Rings for the elven-kings under the sky)
SANG: Of French blood? (I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew)

Yes, because I did a 'FIRST LINES' one a while back.

Galadriel55 02-22-2023 04:40 AM

I kinda wanna say FALAS for the Christmassy one, because it's the season with a lot of Fa-la-las, but I don't think it's particularly dangerous, nor can I recall a First Line with it. :D

Huinesoron 02-22-2023 06:32 AM

S could be STING, who has apparently been performing since 1971 (yikes), and has the advantage of being a Tolkien word. I can't pin it to a poem/song though.

That's because it's not the right answer. :D

Just google 70s male singers/groups. I think it was the name of his group as well.

Not Falas either.

Look at first lines of songs/poems. All well-known; no more Leonard Nimoy or early versions.

'Here' in that clue means 'in this instance/situation' rather than a place.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EARTH, IN THE LAND OF SHIRE--!

I didn't even register that. Good grief.

All this has done so far is prove that a) I know an alarming number of artists from a decade I never lived in and b) there were a lot of Steves, Stevies, and Stevens singing back then.

Fireworks are used during Christmas, and are dangerous to Hobbits in some circumstances, as proven by Merry and Pippin...

Pervinca Took 02-22-2023 11:19 AM

You're kind of close, in that fire is the correct kind of danger.

Fireworks also feature in another remaining clue.

And:

RINGS: A drummer loses nothing, but hisses for them. ('The Lord of the Rings' / Is one of those things)

If you like it, you do.
If you don't, then you boo!

'I sit by the fire and think'.

Pervinca Took 02-22-2023 03:23 PM

Too peaceful. I'm afraid arson and attemped murder are involved ....

Plus that song is one of the other answers. Each clue refers to a different song.

Galadriel55 02-22-2023 03:32 PM

Is N just NOT? Knot - K?

Fear! Fire! Foes! Awake!

Urwen 02-22-2023 04:03 PM

Other than that, there is no words in first lines that are connected with arson...unless...wait! There is! *searches for full text of that one*

Pervinca Took 02-23-2023 06:38 AM

For the first R, the ONLY bit of the straight clue is They/They'll.

Rozenges. Sylup. Remon drops. Ice cleams. I can see how to do it, but I can't find a useful word to chance the liquid on. :-/

Riquids.
