No, not Alduya.

Reposting:

1. SHAGRAT - (Mordor’s tobacco enthusiast?)
2. ORALD - (Rohan’s old one got confused, and became an enigma by another name.)
3. LAER CU BELEG - (His glee curable, the warrior composed an elegy to his friend.)
4. MANDOS - (What will Man do subsequent to death - did even this one know the answer?)
5. His eye sees Teleri from out the dim past,
The first rider, we know, is one that must fast,
His lore less arcane than wizards forbode,
His might, as if Denethor on Gil-galad rode.
6. TIW - (Even with his backward intelligence, he invented letters.)
7. HASUFEL - (To answer your question, No, I hasn’t – the horse bore me aloft.)

Password: SOLMATH (guessed by The Saucepan Man)

Turambar 02-25-2005 09:43 AM

Hints

#3 - scramble two words into three.

#5 - one clue in each line; all point to the same person.

Celebriel Esgaledhel 02-25-2005 12:47 PM

COuld #5 be Orome?

Turambar 02-26-2005 11:55 AM

Not Oromë.

Remember that all the clues are "cryptic", and in this case all 4 are of the same type.

NightKnight 02-28-2005 08:37 AM

3. Laer Cú Beleg, Turin's song to Beleg after he killed him (anagram of "glee curable").

Turambar 02-28-2005 08:39 AM

Correct! :)

Just #5 to go. The 4 clues are right in there. ;)

NightKnight 02-28-2005 08:44 AM

Aragorn! There are names for him in all the lines (Estel, Strider, Elessar, Thorongil)! Now I feel really smart! :D

Turambar 02-28-2005 09:27 AM

Excellent job, NightKnight.

The Saucepan Man is up next. http://forum.barrowdowns.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif

*dons Cryptic armour*

I'm ready!

Turambar 03-01-2005 06:32 AM

I just noticed this - Saucepan's answer to #2 on the previous page (Rohan’s old one got confused, and became an enigma by another name):
Quote:

Taking the "R" from Rohan and "a" (ie one) and mixing them with "old" gives Orald, another name for that well-known enigma, Tom Bombadil.
Actually, the answer was much simpler: I was thinking of Aldor (the Old) of Rohan, an anagram of Orald.

The Saucepan Man took a roundabout route but still got the answer. :)

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-08-2005 01:56 AM

Uh, Sauce?

And up we go...

The Saucepan Man 03-23-2005 08:55 AM

Oh dear - two reminders already!

Sorry for the delay folks.

Here's a puzzle in the classic Password mould. All the clues are cryptic.

1. Roast duck on the menu at the Withered Heath?
2. Armenelos: Reforms are solemn for royal city.
3. Revere Chetwood's centre as an ancient and mysterious site.
4. Ringlo: Musician takes in first light at river.
5. Branch of religion returned engulfing State in the south.
6. Middle-earth’s cyberspace?

Turambar 03-23-2005 03:52 PM

#4 Kiril? I'm thinking of Kiri te Kanawa.

No, but you're on the right track.

Celebrian 03-23-2005 09:36 PM

6) Seeing Stones?

NightKnight 03-24-2005 01:48 AM

4. Ringlo? Ringo takes in L (first letter of Light).

Nope.

Yep.

Celebrian 03-24-2005 01:38 PM

Peking?

1) Kings under the Mountain?
*shoots wildly into the dark

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-25-2005 10:38 PM

6. Middle-earth’s cyberspace?

Toerch Ungol? Ered Gorgoroth?

Celebrian 03-28-2005 11:37 AM

5) Easterlings?

The Saucepan Man 03-28-2005 07:32 PM

Sorry. None of those are correct. :p ;)

Turambar 03-28-2005 09:34 PM

#2 Armenelos (an anagram of are solemn)?

Could #5 be smial?

The Saucepan Man 03-29-2005 05:36 AM

'Fraid not.

Turambar 03-29-2005 09:21 AM

How 'bout Incanus, then? (Suni engulfing Can.)

Ekkaia for number 6?

Is the password FAERIE?

Fror (slain by a cold drake near the W.H.) for number !?

Celebrian 03-29-2005 09:34 AM

Sauron?

3) Undeeps, area south of the Brown Lands?

The Saucepan Man 03-29-2005 09:37 AM

Incanus it is

Well, I had Sunni engulfing Ca (California) and then reversed, but your reasoning is much the same and produces the same result - which is of course correct.

Alas, Ekkaia is not (although I suspect that you are thinking along the right lines).

For ease of reference, I'm repeating the clues, with solutions to date, here:

1. Roast duck on the menu at the Withered Heath?
2. Armenelos: Reforms are solemn for royal city.
3. Revere Chetwood's centre as an ancient and mysterious site.
4. Ringlo: Musician takes in first light at river.
5. Incanus: Branch of religion returned engulfing State in the south.
6. Middle-earth’s cyberspace?

Edit: FAERIE is indeed the Password. Well done Turambar! :)

But neither fror nor Undeeps are correct. Then again, Turambar is getting very warm with his reasoning for #1.

Celebrian 03-29-2005 09:42 AM

ether and Ring?

6) Ethring?

Turambar! summa cum laude as usual! :D

The Saucepan Man 03-29-2005 09:43 AM

Nope.

Celebrian 03-29-2005 10:22 AM

1) Fram, the worm-slayer/hoard-winner?
3) Entwood? (secretly prefers R-Chet/Archet, but for the beginning letter)

Turambar 03-29-2005 10:44 AM

Encircling Sea for #6?

The Saucepan Man 03-29-2005 02:01 PM

No more correct answers to add, I'm afraid.

Some hints:

#1 Turambar has already mentioned part of the answer in explaining the reasoning behind one of his answers.

#3 The word "centre" is an important part of this clue.

#6 What sort of space might an e-mail be sent from, to or through?

Turambar 03-30-2005 10:15 AM

D'oh! I couldn't figure out why duck was in there (#1).

"Roast duck" = FIRE DRAKE. Absurdly simple, like most riddles, when you see the answer.

#3 still has me mystified. Thinking "aloud": The real Chetwood has no centre that I know of. Is the cryptic centre "TW" or "ETWO"? You can get ENTWOOD (an ancient and mysterious place, beginning with "E") from the latter by adding NOD, but how does this relate to "revere"?

Possibly silly guess for #6: Emyn Muil? (E-muil) :p

The Saucepan Man 03-30-2005 11:23 AM

Keep going ...

1. Fire-Drake: Roast duck on the menu at the Withered Heath?

#3 You are on the right track, but need to expand your search beyond Chetwood.

#6 Again, you are thinking along the right lines, but look back at my previous hint.

Celebrian 03-30-2005 04:53 PM

*thinking aloud for #3* I see the word "two" in the middle of "Chetwood's".

3)Enyd?

6) East-West Road? (The Great East-West Road)

The Saucepan Man 03-30-2005 07:44 PM

Sorry. Neither of those is correct, Celebrian.

Turambar 03-31-2005 04:32 AM

How about Eregion (e-region)?

And #3 is Erech - an embedded answer.

The Saucepan Man 03-31-2005 06:09 AM

Quite so

Correct again, Turambar, on both counts.

1. Fire-Drake: Roast duck on the menu at the Withered Heath?
2. Armenelos: Reforms are solemn for royal city.
3. Erech: Revere Chetwood's centre as an ancient and mysterious site.
4. Ringlo: Musician takes in first light at river.
5. Incanus: Branch of religion returned engulfing State in the south.
6. Eregion: Middle-earth’s cyberspace?

You are up next. :)
