Correct for ST. But "ing" is not "angry"... :)

Neither is ORCRI. ;)

It's nearly CROSS, though.

ORCRIST?

Not that goblins are 'everything.' ;)

1. Violet dwarf retreats from rooster’s call in the north - aye, in the north.
2. In sonars, ill-advised choice of weapon.
3. Angry, yes for one short street it would cut anything.
4. Adorn yourself with glamour, one for naught and all around, with a grain (or half) of salt.
5. Round nearly a Numenorian’s legume.
6. Without his bundle, Elvis Presley can see quite far.
7. “I can stow!” - or so they said in the north-eastern parts.
8. Spam the right god with chaos, and it will show you the way.
9. EARRAME: An organ and a horse, at sea and afloat.

New page.

5 could be NAVY.

Oh come on, you are so close! Orcrist is not the only thing of its kind to end on -ST though... *hint hint* You keep overdoing one of the elements, it's more simple...

5 is not NAVY, and I am note sure how you got there so I can't be more specific... But will say it's not anywhere close.

You see, I'm pants at anything pre-Third Age. One of the reasons I love the First Age so much is because there is still so much in it for me to get my head round, as used to be the case with LOTR, long years ago. The flip-side of the coin is that I am not very good at solving clues on it.

Galadriel55 06-26-2021 07:02 PM

Aye.

No, but that's the spirit. :D You're looking for two separate words (ie the legume is not the Numenorian himself).

Pervinca Took 06-27-2021 03:06 AM

Tamarind is a legume.

Is there a Tar-Manid or a Tar-Damin? ;)

Most legumes I can find are kinds of beans or peas, none of which appear to unscramble and produce a Numenorean.

Urwen 06-27-2021 04:24 AM

Piggybacking on that, Tar-Amandil?

So the legume, scrambled or not unscrambled, is not the Numenorean.

What does ROUND mean, I wonder? A round shield? Nearly round? An arc or arch?

I told you, the legume is not the Numenorian, there are 2 separate words in the answer. Also, you mention the right legume in this post - but not the right Numenorian. The clue is simple and a bit silly, don't overthink it.

No to all of the Tars.

Ah, good questions all. :) What is ROUND indeed? Especially given that "legume" can hardly be the straight clue.

Pervinca Took 06-27-2021 08:17 AM

A fight, like a boxing round? :D

Or a reference to Isildur never quite getting the beers in? ;)

Well, yes, I suppose ROUND has a few different meanings, but also, I told you this is pretty straightforward and you're overthinking it. ;)

Pervinca Took 06-27-2021 09:48 AM

Maybe a reference to Arda being about to become round, not flat.

That kind of round, but again, much too grand for what I'm talking about. It just means "round" is a straight clue descriptor of the answer. Which, in cryptic terms, is nearly a Numenorian's legume. It even follows the same grammatical structure. Sub in a Numenorian, sub in a legume, and that is nearly the answer, which is round.

Urwen 06-27-2021 01:02 PM

Is it Isildur's bean?

Is the password INANIMATE?

Making 2 NARSIL - hidden, running in the words of the clue.

And well done, Urwen! :)

Pervinca Took 06-28-2021 08:08 AM

Could 1 be the IRON HILLS?

I mean, you get purple-headed mountains. There's one in a famous hymn!

Galadriel55 06-28-2021 09:00 AM

Yes to Arkenstone.

For #1, you are right about "iron", but for the wrong reasons. The second half is incorrect though.

IRON CROWN.

THAT'S how we get the rooster's CROW in. Then N for north.

I don't get 'violet dwarf retreats,' though.

Oh! NORI backwards.

Why VIOLET, though? No-one even had a violet hood or beard.

Glamour without O but add I.

Oh! And Na is half of NaCl.

Two more to go. The Elvis Presley one is cheeky. #8 requires one synonym.

Pervinca Took 06-28-2021 10:14 AM

I wonder if the synonym could be TRASH, for SPAM.

Although I thought the answer to this one might be a road. Like 'The North Road' (with 'Thor' in it) or 'The Straight Road.'

Not a road, and the word you need to replace is not SPAM. Also, perhaps "word substitution" is a better description than "synonym" for this.

I guess the straight part of the clue is 'it,' then. ;)

It could be a map. That's shows the way.

Hang about - maybe it could an' all!

Is it THROR'S MAP?

THOR ... SPAM ... shows way with the additional R and the actual answer.

And I suppose there's a little chaos to get that to THROR'S MAP.

If so, there's a LOT of dwarf in this password. But then, it's inanimate stuff, and dwarves LIKE their stuff.

Pervinca Took 06-28-2021 12:07 PM

The Elvis element could possibly be KING.

I reckon one could see pretty far from MENELTARMA.

Where only the King can speak (and only utter prayers, I think).

Galadriel55 06-28-2021 01:51 PM

Wheee! THROR'S MAP is indeed correct, for reasons stated. I suppose Dwarves do like their inanimate things - but Nori was purely my fault, the Dwarves had nothing to do with Morgoth's tiaras. ;)

MENELTARMA is not correct though. Try using Elvis's full epithet to start with.

Pervinca Took 06-28-2021 02:14 PM

That makes me think the M answer might be a rock. (King of rock and roll?)

I tried looking through titles of Elvis's songs - couldn't believe how many there are! Many of them are religious, and I think some are covers, though.

*nods*

Not any of his songs. His "title" is sufficient.

Pervinca Took 06-28-2021 02:23 PM

The only one I can think of is Mindolluin.
