7. Thingol (HING+LOT)

Urwen 05-10-2019 04:06 AM

4. Morgoth (gorm+hot)

Urwen 05-10-2019 04:06 AM

Which makes the theme 'handlers of Silmarili'.

Pervinca Took 05-10-2019 05:50 AM

So we can see it ....

And if we take these answers as correct:

4. Morgoth
5. Maedhros
6. Maglor
7. Thingol

The password could be SILMARIL itself.

But I'm quite inclined to accept 'Beren' for 3, so perhaps not. (Also, Urwen, out of curiosity: I can see how a crew is a 'lot' of people, but what's a hing?)

A synonym for key, of course.

Pervinca Took 05-10-2019 06:30 AM

A hing is a key?

Urwen 05-10-2019 06:31 AM

That's what I found when searching for synonyms....

Pervinca Took 05-10-2019 06:36 AM

There's a city in California called Temecula!

I found this by scrambling clue + team.

Not a Tolkien character, but pretty cool! :D

Urwen 05-10-2019 06:37 AM

I really wanted to get this password....and yet, someone else got it, again.... :(

Huinesoron 05-10-2019 06:42 AM

1. There's a Jewish pastry named a nunt, which is present in the name of the noted fiend UNGOLIANT. The remaining letters ('golia') could easily make a name, and include 'al', the Arabic particle for 'the' (I believe).

It would once again rule out 'Silmaril', though.

Urwen 05-10-2019 06:45 AM

Then I still have a chance.

Pervinca Took 05-10-2019 06:52 AM

Wake up, William!

;)

William Cloud Hicklin 05-10-2019 07:51 AM

Good morning all.

Beren, Maedhros and Maglor are correct. The others, not so much. The Password is still on the table.

1. Arab handmaid ate Jewish pastry- the upset without 440 produced a fiend
2. Get out? Nein! He's backwards!
3. BEREN: Remember England; he was in there.
4. Bluetooth gets garbled after tea, so you'll have to unscramble him
5. MAEDHROS: He's like, "Crazy beach, crazy!"
6. MAGLOR: Glam rocker without even thinking- he was the first and might be the last
7. Key crew! Activity will reveal him
8. He's a dunce on one side

Pervinca Took 05-10-2019 08:07 AM

GURTHANG, maybe? (Password).

Urwen 05-10-2019 08:08 AM

1 and 4 are the most difficult ones, I feel.....

Urwen 05-10-2019 08:12 AM

Very well, since I probably won't be getting the password anytime soon, because others are determined to do it, then will not be helping any of you anymore. Solve every damn password if it means so much to you, but don't ask for my help again.

Half the reason I play is to get the password right, so this kinda discourages me.....

William Cloud Hicklin 05-10-2019 08:28 AM

Urwen, they're just guessing in the dark. "Gurthang" is nowhere close. (What does Turin's sword have to do with Beren, Maedhros or Maglor?)

I venture that nobody's getting it until they figure out the theme, and that won't happen until more clues are solved.

I would say 4 and 7. And 2 is tricksy.

Could we get some hints for those, then?

Urwen 05-10-2019 08:38 AM

And could the password be Peredhil?

William Cloud Hicklin 05-10-2019 08:40 AM

No on Peredhil.

Before I start giving hints, let's see what the crowd can do with the easier ones (or even the harder ones, which sometimes fall to lightbulb-moments).

Besides, I haven't seen Hun or Gal yet this morning.

William Cloud Hicklin 05-10-2019 08:47 AM

1 has been edited- when typing it up I left out a phrase

Urwen 05-10-2019 08:49 AM

A fiend without a butt?

Not the best clue, so I changed it to something easier:

"Arab handmaid ate Jewish pastry- the upset without 440 produced a fiend"

William Cloud Hicklin 05-10-2019 08:53 AM

Let's put it this way: "handmaid" would have been a pretty specific cultural allusion, to a generation raised before Margaret Atwood.

Urwen 05-10-2019 08:55 AM

Ambarussa has both a bum and an ***.....

Once we remove those, we're left with AARSSA and AMBARU, respectively....

Is there any bad guy with ***/bum in their name....?

Maybe UMBARTO.....If we remove BUM, we're left with ARTO.....

And Jewish pastry is probably a bagel.....

Urwen, I don't think I've solved a password in weeks; you gave one two days ago.

Everyone plays to try and get the answer right; it's not at all fair to tell people they're not allowed to do so. Frankly it makes the whole game a lot less fun, because now I have to worry that I'm going to be told off if I get anything right.

Pervinca Took 05-10-2019 09:03 AM

This thread is most fun when everyone is trying to solve the clues and passwords. Yes, you groan inwardly a little if someone else gets it first, but we've all had that happen to us. It's the game. And it's also part of the rules.

Back to the current puzzle:

Where on earth has bum/butt come from?

Urwen 05-10-2019 09:07 AM

Well, it's not fair for those of us who actually try to solve it for someone to just swoop in and claim it without doing a thing to earn in, and yet it is being done. Want me to stop telling you off. Then earn it.

As for where bum/butt part came from, look at edited clues.

Urwen 05-10-2019 09:10 AM

I came across a term bitch while googling. Do I need to find an arab word for bitch and put a bagel inside of it?

Pervinca Took 05-10-2019 09:12 AM

I've had passwords solved by others when I've guessed lots of the clues. Even by you.

I respect my team-mates enough to enjoy their contributions. It's a shared experience. And it is, in the last analysis, a game.

I am sorry, but as I said, I am discouraged.

Besides, I have said that I wouldn't be helping you anymore. I haven't said anything more or anything less than that. I didn't insult any of you or anything.

I apologize. I am in bad mood because I am bored and my tooth hurts, so yea, I am a bit cranky.

I've been in a bad mood most of the time for a couple of weeks, for a whole bunch of reasons (including online haranguing elsewhere last night, which is why I'm on a very short fuse over this), so I get that; 's fine. I'll probably come back to this thread in a couple of days.

As a point of trivia/peace offering, before William showed up, I was able to construct 'Gondolin' as a password by using all the guesses that were made except for 'Morgoth' on #4. The same answers also gave 'Irensaga', which is one of the White Mountains, apparently.

Personally, I'm terrible at anagrams, especially anagrams from synonyms, and most of the straight clues have been 'him' or 'her' of late, so the only way I can participate is by using a few existing answers to guess either a password or theme, and work from there. (The rash of non-first-letter passwords has been murder on that, let me tell you.)

Made necessary by the fact that we've kind of come to expect (and to enjoy the challenge of making) themed passwords, which wasn't the case before. Also simply the challenge of creating something new.

I kind of like the way the red letters are sprinkled over the puzzle in the not-in-a-straight-line passwords, though. :)

William Cloud Hicklin 05-10-2019 10:03 AM

Folks, disregard the bum/butt thing; it was a poor clue, and #1 has I think been notably improved.

--------------------------------

Perhaps discontent would be mollified if a rule were created, according to which the person who solves a clue gets first crack at the Password, and everyone else has to hold their tongues until the clue-solver takes his or her stab at it?

Am I on right track here?

Urwen 05-10-2019 10:10 AM

440 stands for AAO.

Or maybe we need an equivalent of that in roman numerals.
