And in English...

Sorry to break up the flow of this quiz, but I couldn't resist.

Quote:

Hail Dayspring, brightest of angels,
sent to men upon Middle-earth,
and the sun's righteous radiance,
of a brilliance exceeding the stars;
you by your own self continually illumine every hour
Christ I, lines 104-8, tr. S.A.J. Bradley.

Tolkien thought that Earendel was a name for one of the stars, possibly Venus as the morning star. Although here it refers to Christ, he notes that in the Blickling Homilies (mid tenth century) it is used to refer to John the Baptist.

On that basis, might 6. be Gil-Galad?

Gothmog 11-29-2005 11:46 AM

And the confusing nr 5 Orthanc? Like in "...or thank...". But in that case there's should be a "me" after the long _____ I guess...

EDIT: Sorry, missed Firefoot's answer in some way...

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 12-01-2005 08:45 AM

I'm a bit out of practice with this thread, but I'll see what I can do for you.

1. Throw a station to nobleman.
2. Sailor and other crewmembers, followed by short fairy, reach highest heaven
3. Faelivrin. Fail at everything initially, before fifty-four cut rings provide a pseudonym.
4. Charge is reduced before storm over point, so island is reached.
5. Advance, we hear, leads one to ill-starred restorer
6. Mighty hunter (note 50) brings flower

Firefoot 12-01-2005 02:45 PM

3. Faelivrin?

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 12-01-2005 03:15 PM

Certainly is

Indeed so, Firefoot.

mormegil 12-01-2005 03:53 PM

2. Elendil?

Beleg 12-02-2005 02:00 AM

Or is it Eärendil for the second one?

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 12-02-2005 03:09 AM

Keep trying

Neither, I'm afraid.

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 02-08-2006 06:24 AM

Get the password before I forget it

The last time I posted a password here it was solved within two days. Can it be that the loremasters of old have wholly forsaken this thread?

Here's the current password again:

Turambar 03-23-2006 08:02 PM

2. Tarmenel?
4. Tol Galen?
5. Loni?
6. Nimrodel?

The Password, friend, is MELLON.

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 03-24-2006 07:04 AM

Well spoken

Welcome back, Turambar. Long time, no see.

You're right on all counts. Fancy having a stab at #1?

1. Castamir. Throw a station to nobleman.
2. Tarmenel. Sailor and other crewmembers, followed by short fairy, reach highest heaven
3. Faelivrin. Fail at everything initially, before fifty-four cut rings provide a pseudonym.
4. Tol Galen. Charge is reduced before storm over point, so island is reached.
5. Lóni. Advance, we hear, leads one to ill-starred restorer
6. Nimrodel. Mighty hunter (note 50) brings flower

Password: Mellon. A straightforward end to a tortuous path.

[EDIT]: Updated to take account of Saucepan's solution to the last clue.

Turambar 03-24-2006 07:27 AM

Well, it's a 6 letter word ending in "AM" that is a nobleman (or means "nobleman"), but what it is exactly is escaping me.

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 03-24-2006 10:33 AM

You're right about the meaning, but not the number of letters or the word's ending.

The Saucepan Man 03-24-2006 10:40 AM

Got it!

Throw = Cast
a = a
Station = Mir (the space station)

Castamir was a Gondorian noble before seizing the throne.

Turambar 03-24-2006 11:00 AM

Right . . . that's what I meant. :D

Should I try to come up with one or has this game faded like a three age old wraith ?

Perhaps it shall be reinvigorated with a fresh question. In other words, yes please do. :)

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 03-27-2006 04:44 AM

At last another password

Yes, Saucepan, the first answer is Castamir.

I think it was just my clues that stalled the thread, Turambar. There seems to be plenty of interest in it.

Turambar 03-27-2006 07:07 AM

1. Columbus on the wild blue, stern, where eagles dare.
2. Torn blanket was a faithful friend.
3. A ghoulish time, reportedly.
4. Daffy Duck’s imprecation in writing.
5. Circle after that fellow, and find the island to come.
6. Courage destroyed those who could not flee.
7. A passenger on the small street, that returning man.
8. A menace about their writing.

glares at Charybdis, foolishly :p

The Saucepan Man 03-27-2006 07:42 AM

I'm on a roll ... :D

1. Crissaegrim (Cris Colombus; grim = stern)
2. ?
3. Rethe (Sounds like wreath)
4. Cirth (Daffy’s rendering of “curse”)
5. Himring (Him = that fellow; ring = circle)
6. Olvar (Anagram of “valor”)
7. Strider (St = small street; rider = passenger)
8. Tehar (Anagram of threat; threat = menace)

The Password is CARCHOST

I knew I shouldn't have taunted Charybdis. :(

The Saucepan Man 03-27-2006 08:02 AM

For completeness' sake ...

2. Aghan? (A torn Afghan blanket?)

JennyHallu 03-27-2006 08:03 AM

 Holy Cryptologists, Batman!

Turambar 03-27-2006 08:11 AM

Remember the scene in the movie when the Oathbreakers swept through the Pelennor, simultaneously destroying Sauron's army and any remaining similarity between the movie and the book?

That's what The Saucepan Man just did to my puzzle. http://www.minastirith.com/ubb/icons/icon21.gif

JennyHallu 03-27-2006 08:17 AM

:stares in awe:

It was beautiful...

Are you calling me an amorphous green blob? ;)

2. Latecomer buries article in religious location ...
3. … accompanied by friend visiting place with ring.
4. Key player in polo ring.
5. Forest native to feel ill after consuming girl, we hear.

Turambar 03-27-2006 10:16 AM

http://www.nataliedee.com/091905/blob.jpg

1. Ulfang ?
5. Olorin ?

The Saucepan Man 03-27-2006 10:53 AM

The likeness is truly frightening ... ;)

Neither of those is correct, I am afraid, although one of them is in the right vicinity ...

Turambar 03-28-2006 04:48 PM

Ah - #2 and #3 are Alatar and Pallando. (Altar + "a"; Pal + land + "o")

The Saucepan Man 03-28-2006 06:50 PM

Correct! :)

1. Vala lost weight after dog turned traitor.
2. Alatar Latecomer buries article in religious location ...
3. Pallando … accompanied by friend visiting place with ring.
4. Key player in polo ring.
