Lindolirian 03-18-2004 07:05 AM

4. Helluin

Miriel 03-18-2004 11:32 AM

Ah, some good answers there. :)

'Nauglamir' is correct.

All others wrong, but Nilpaurion is very very close with the guess for no. 8 ... just follow all of the steps in the clue...

NightKnight 03-18-2004 12:22 PM

4. Sirius?
8. The Followers or The Aftercomers?

Firefoot 03-18-2004 03:19 PM

Don't ask...

#2 - The new Sawmill in the Shire?
#9 - Cirith Ungol?

Turambar 03-18-2004 05:48 PM

#4 Luinil ?

Finwe 03-18-2004 07:00 PM

8. Followers?

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-18-2004 09:31 PM

Hmmm...

8. Hildórien?

Miriel 03-19-2004 11:52 AM

NightKnight is right with the Aftercomers. (A translation of Hildor).
Turambar is right with Luinil. :)

Cirith Ungol is wrong. Nilpaurion's first guess at #9 was good.
#2 ... nope.

If you need any hints, yell...

NightKnight 03-19-2004 12:01 PM

9. Winding Stair?

Miriel 03-19-2004 12:08 PM

Nope.

NightKnight 03-19-2004 12:14 PM

The other stair, with the name I can't remember? :p

Miriel 03-19-2004 12:20 PM

*grins*

No, it's not a stairway. As I said, Nilpaurion was almost right with Cirith Forn en Andrath. Almost.... ;)

Lindolirian 03-19-2004 12:23 PM

Perhaps you meant the more common version of its name used by Gandalf, "the High Pass"?

Miriel 03-19-2004 12:33 PM

No. The High Pass isn't passed by Greenway. You need to go further south.

Miriel 03-19-2004 12:35 PM

Update (as I drive myself mad going back and forth between pages ;)):

1. Gladden Fields - Cheery hideout stands before stretches of grass.
2. Robin Smallburrow - Confused Sam will burn or rob.
3. Araman - Half a judge follows Elvish noble in barren wasteland.
4. Luinil - Blue-shining star.
5. Woses - A lack of direction makes Wild Men miserable.
6. Nauglamir - Gift to Elvish leader causes his downfall.
7. Strawheads - Incomers precede heads with dried grass to mock thralls.
8. Aftercomers - Beginnings of a hobbit's departed uncle meet Elvish land, and are translated for men.
9. Andrath - Long Climb passed by Greenway.

NightKnight 03-19-2004 12:43 PM

9. Redhorn Pass/Pass of Caradhras?

Miriel 03-19-2004 12:45 PM

No. Check Greenway's path, and remember the 'long climb' bit. When I say Nilpaurion was close, it's not because he chose a mountain pass.

NightKnight 03-19-2004 12:52 PM

Then it has to be Andrath, which means "long climb".

Silmarien 03-19-2004 10:51 PM

1. Dunharrow?

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-20-2004 02:22 AM

My 16" gun blew up, so I'm using the Mk-26 missile launcher...

9. Tharbad?

Miriel 03-20-2004 07:06 AM

Andrath it is. :)
Dunharrow is wrong.
So ... just some cryptic things left now ... again, shout if hints are needed...

Lindolirian 03-22-2004 04:12 PM

7. Incomers precede heads with dried grass to mock thralls.

The Incomers are the Easterlings who call the Edain of Hithlum Strawheads and make them thralls.

Finwe 03-22-2004 09:02 PM

2) Master of Doom?

Turambar 03-23-2004 08:41 AM

#5 Woses --> woe without the S's ?

#1 Gladden Fields ?

*shouts for hint on #2*

Miriel 03-23-2004 10:25 AM

Ooh, good answers.

Lindolirian is right with 'strawheads'.
Turambar is right with 'woses' and 'gladden fields'.

As for #2 ... well, it's
confused 'sam will burn or rob'.
So take confused as having its usual cryptic meaning - ie, indicating an anagram - and see what you can do with the letters.

Hint: You're looking for a living being.

Should be easier now. ;)

Turambar 03-23-2004 11:30 AM

Robin Smallburrow? Though you seem to have an extra "R", and no "W". :)

Miriel 03-23-2004 11:47 AM

Robin Smallburrow it is. :)

The 'w' is from 'will', and there are 3 'r's (burn or rob) and 3 'r's in Robin Smallburrow. So it should work. ;)

Password, anyone?

Miriel 03-23-2004 11:50 AM

The completed clues:

Turambar 03-23-2004 01:16 PM

Oops - you're right - well, that was a nice scramble, then. http://forum.barrowdowns.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif

Miriel 03-29-2004 02:09 PM

Thanks!

Anyone going to venture a guess at this password? (Hint: look at the second letters in each word)

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-29-2004 09:34 PM

Olofantur?

An earlier name for Irmo/Lórien? ;)

Miriel 03-30-2004 10:33 AM

Woohoo!

That would be correct. :)

Continue!

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-31-2004 09:10 PM

Thanks!

Plese wait for my next puzzle. It'll be here in a bit...well...maybe longer than that.

Nilpaurion Felagund 04-04-2004 10:57 PM

'ere we go...

1. Old and Elder.
2. Elvish solar year.
3. V. Eärendil - He was the fifth king of Gondor.
4. Sounds like a diminutive king.
5. Hobbit between one hot table.

Enjoy. Be safe. Don't follow the lights. ;)

Evisse the Blue 04-05-2004 02:41 AM

obvious guesses

#2 Yen
#1- Tom Bombadil?

Finwe 04-05-2004 09:38 PM

4) Prince?

The Saucepan Man 04-06-2004 07:16 AM

Shurely shome mistake ...

Nil, is that the answer to #3, or is it part of the clue?

Nilpaurion Felagund 04-07-2004 03:07 AM

Ok...

Sauce, that was the answer for #3.

As for your guesses, hmmm...wrong!

Some clues (before I am exiled for a week to the provinces):

1, 4, and 5 are cryptic. The rest are not. :)

symestreem 04-08-2004 08:40 PM

#1 Gnome?

NightKnight 04-10-2004 02:21 AM

2. Coraner?
