Nahald, perhaps? As it's mannish for secret, and is also another name for Deagol, who held the ring.
|
Since it's been three days since there was any movement here I'll post the new password and let Saucepan respond to that answer in his own time.
1: Arrested elderly Hobbit 2: Dark goddess pursued by motor and chopper to a chilly spot 3: Flat, stupid and wet: why go there? 4: Ring and staff lead to destruction in deadly furnace 5: Underground king is entrance, we hear 6: Fellow among sheep tends to repeat, right? This will fence them in! 7: Note area is recipient of gifts 8: Fightin' man, you say? |
Woo hoo!
#1 Lobelia ? #2 Helcaraxe ? #6 Rammas Echor ? [ August 25, 2003: Message edited by: Turambar ] |
Sorry for the delay. I've not been on-line over the weekend.
Beren, Nahald was the correct answer to #4. It is the original (as opposed to translated) name for Deagol and, as you say, means 'secret'. As for the new Password: #4 - Orodruin. ('O' is a ring, followed by 'rod' another word for a staff and 'ruin' meaning destruction. The whole is a deadly furnace.) #5 - Durin (which sounds like 'Door-in', an entrance). |
Ah!
Then is the Password Theodred ? |
#1 Tom Cotton Sr.?
|
#1 could be Will Whitfoot, though Théodred wouldn't work then...
|
It appears that composing a Password is sometimes like making Thanksgiving dinner for a family with a lot of kids.
Hours in the making, 20 minutes to devour. http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/D.gif |
Looks like Turambar's right with the Password, which should help to polish off the remainder of the Thanksgiving feast.
#7 might be Eregion - the note 'E' plus region, meaning 'area', Eregion being where Annatar's gifts were received. For #8, I'll guess at Duilin, which sounds like duellin', a form of fighting without the 'G'. |
Here's the current state of play:
1: Arrested elderly Hobbit 2: Helcaraxë - Dark goddess pursued by motor and chopper to a chilly spot 3: Flat, stupid and wet: why go there? 4: Orodruin - Ring and staff lead to destruction in deadly furnace 5: Durin - Underground king is entrance, we hear 6: Rammas Echor - Fellow among sheep tends to repeat, right? This will fence them in! 7: Eregion - Note area is recipient of gifts 8: Duilin - Fightin' man, you say? Turambar has the password, which is indeed Théodred. |
#1 Tobold ? (Though I don't see arrested in there.)
|
Neither do I, Turambar. I'm afraid that's not the answer.
|
The Old Took ?
|
#3 must be Evendim (even = flat; dim = stupid; and being a lake it is clearly wet.).
No idea about #1 - I'll leave that one to you, Turambar. |
Turambar: I was only looking for 'Took', but you're close enough.
Saucepan Man: Spot on. 'Evendim' it is. The remains of that repast, therefore, look like this: 1: Took - Arrested elderly Hobbit 2: Helcaraxë - Dark goddess pursued by motor and chopper to a chilly spot 3: Evendim - Flat, stupid and wet: why go there? 4: Orodruin - Ring and staff lead to destruction in deadly furnace 5: Durin - Underground king is entrance, we hear 6: Rammas Echor - Fellow among sheep tends to repeat, right? This will fence them in! 7: Eregion - Note area is recipient of gifts 8: Duilin - Fightin' man, you say? |
Then it's time for FOOTBALL !!
It'll take me a day or two at least to prepare the next one. If anyone (including any potential new players) can post one in the meantime, please feel free. Good one, Squatter. [ August 26, 2003: Message edited by: Turambar ] |
As invited, here is a very quick one. I trust this will take not too much longer than its swift genesis.
1 Becomes voluble after essential potable. 2 Very aware, to note self. 3 Hark! Sounds like a nonuple wizard. 4 The purist's bureaucracy? 5 Better to have a happy ending, golfer removes tee and drives into small woods. EDIT: Last clue altered slightly, 27/08. #1 Loudwater ?
[ August 26, 2003: Message edited by: Turambar ] |
Yes sir!
|
#3 Nindalf?
|
And again, correct.
|
I'll have to http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smile...cratchchin.gif about the other three.
|
Time to break this trend of correct answering, methinks:
#4 Red Book (as opposed to red boxes and red tape) |
I fear not, good, sir. Not pure enough, by half.
|
Apparently the wind was northerly. http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/D.gif
http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/idea1.gif White Council ? If so, would the Password be Lenwë ? [ August 26, 2003: Message edited by: Turambar ] |
Yes, and yes!
Well played, sir. |
The original deserter.
We still have #2 and #4 to go. |
I'm stuck. I keep coming back to Tiger Woods for #4 because he has a "T" - and woods, for that matter - in his name, but I can't make anything of "IGER". Does a "happy ending" mean a "Y", or something else?
And #2 is Greek to me. Anyone else have some ideas? [ August 27, 2003: Message edited by: Turambar ] |
Nope, I'm stumped too.
Like you, Turambar, I was thinking along the lines of Tiger Woods for #5, largely because I know very few golfers. For #2, I was wondering whether "self" might refer to "ego", but my wondering hasn't got me very far. A hint or two maybe, Rimbaud? |
My apologies, it seems the clues were poorly constructed - I can blame only myself and the hastiness of the creation.
For #2 - you would have to be very aware to see that 'note self' is an anagram of Elfstone. The fifth is just an out-and-out bad clue, I'd say on reflection. If you remove a 't' to find a happy ending, you would have started perhaps with Entings, likened to small woods. Golfing was a red herring. Bad clue, mea culpa, let's see Turambar's latest. |
I shouldn't be too hard on myself if I were you, Rimbaud; it takes me ages to think up mine. Most of us have been practicing on the Cryptic Clues thread for a while now, so perhaps you'd like to join us.

It's good to see that the game is going well now.
Try this one: (1) Forlong the Fat (Protractedly thick, before being cut down in the field.) (2) Eru (Singular composer.) (3) Anar (Fiery offspring of Yavanna and Nienna.) (4) Where the first long drive occurred? (5) The Ring-bearer stepped into his shoes. (6) Roheryn (Don't look this in the mouth.) [ August 29, 2003: Message edited by: Turambar ] |
OK, these are a bit speculative, but I'll give them a go.
Is #2 Iluvatar or Eru - he is referred to as "the One" and he initiated the Music of the Ainur? And I'll guess at Shadowfax for #6 - a gift horse. |
# 3: The Two Trees? Yavanna sang them into being, while Nienna watered the ground with her tears.
|
Eru is correct; the other two guesses are wrong, though both are definitely on the right track; I guess each of those had two possible answers. Oops. I composed this one very quickly.

#3# the Sun?
|
So close - a little more Elvish please . . .
|
Well, in that case, then:
1: Forlong the Fat 3: Anor 4: North-South Road 6: Roheryn and the password is Fëanor. [ August 29, 2003: Message edited by: The Squatter of Amon Rûdh ] |
1, 3 (Anar, actually) and 6 are correct, but the password is not Fëanor.
|
Is #5 Underhill, as in Frodo's alias?
No idea what the Password can be if it's not Feanor. |
