Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 08:55 AM

That's for you to guess. :D

Urwen 06-04-2019 08:55 AM

7. Turin (Turnover-over+I)

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 08:55 AM

1. Spoil, but beam endlessly within for him.
2. Two geezers join to make a third! (More nicknames than epesses).
3. Disperse racket because ... oh, just see him!
4. Film genre disquiets him a little.
5. He sounds like a mutilated fish.
6. He's a famous gun, give and take a vowel, but lacks sibilance.
7. Endless pastry adds pronoun for him.
8. Turn, turn, and swallow metal for him.

Urwen 06-04-2019 08:56 AM

Turin and Turgon are the only names containing 'turn'.

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 08:56 AM

Nope, not Turin.

Or Turgon.

Who has said the name has to contain 'turn?'

Urwen 06-04-2019 09:00 AM

3. Leod, from DOLE

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 09:02 AM

Nope.

You wrote 'turn, turn'. That means one is an anagram indicator and the other is to be used.

Also, is my guess and reasoning for 7th clue correct?

These are difficult.....

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 09:11 AM

Oh ... turnover as a pastry! A clever guess, but no.

You're right about turn, turn ... but it doesn't have to be the *actual* word, does it?

Urwen 06-04-2019 09:31 AM

So a synonym of turn?

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 09:32 AM

Could be. ;)

Urwen 06-04-2019 09:36 AM

But it might not be, is that it?

Urwen 06-04-2019 10:37 AM

So the gun isn't colt either?

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 10:42 AM

I didn't know what you meant by colt. No, colt is not an answer, nor an element of any of the clues.

Urwen 06-04-2019 10:45 AM

I got clue 8!

Dwalin (AL within WIND)

And 6 is Bilbo (from BB)

Urwen 06-04-2019 11:26 AM

And 1 is Balin (BALK-K + IN)

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 11:36 AM

DWALIN: Turn, turn, and swallow metal for him.

Well done! Dwalin is correct.

Bilbo and Balin are wrong, though.

Urwen 06-04-2019 11:37 AM

Theme: Dwarves?

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 11:38 AM

Not dwarves.

Urwen 06-04-2019 11:41 AM

If the password didn't have 8 words, I'd say that the password is Thorin.....

Urwen 06-04-2019 11:45 AM

If it weren't for 'endlessly' part of the clue, #1 would have been Maeglin (gleam+in), but since that part exists, it's not...... :(

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 11:52 AM

Ah, now I see where you're going wrong.

'Spoil' isn't an anagram indicator.

Urwen 06-04-2019 11:56 AM

Then 1 is Thorin (ROT+IN)

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 11:58 AM

Nope. It ain't.

Urwen 06-04-2019 12:00 PM

Then I am lost. Nothing makes sense. I keep looking for names, but I can only see Balin, Thorin and Maeglin there.

I tried Fundin too, because of father/son possibility, but he doesn't fit either.....

Urwen 06-04-2019 12:04 PM

Or if ACH somehow means 'beam', then we'd get Marach. :/

Urwen 06-04-2019 12:11 PM

5. Amdir (MARD+I)

Urwen 06-04-2019 12:12 PM

1. Amroth (HARM+THROW-W)

Huinesoron 06-04-2019 12:13 PM

So we're looking for a synonym for 'spoil', with a synonym for 'beam', truncated and placed in the middle of it. No anagram indicator.

So if the words were 'ruin' and 'plank', the answer would be ru + pla + in. Except that's not a Tolkien name. ^_^

Spoil could be rot-decay-mould, ruin-wreck-damage, or (if Pervinca is a big fan of Time Team) something like earth, dirt, or even slag (heap, as in blast furnace). Or of course 'soil', but that seems a bit too on the nose.

Beam could be a noun or a verb, and could be light or wood. I think it's used in ships, too.

hS has little time, and no actual ideas, just musings

Exactement.

It's not as hard as you think.

No further correct *answers* at present, though.

Urwen 06-04-2019 01:01 PM

Any of these?

Urwen 06-04-2019 01:10 PM

I know what #1 is now, and I know your secret weakness too, Pervinca. Just as I am fond of Maeglin, you are fond of Maglor (GLOW-W inside of MAR). And we both used our secret weaknesses quite a lot in our puzzles recently.

Urwen 06-04-2019 01:14 PM

But what is the connection between Dwalin and Maglor.....?

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 03:12 PM

MAGLOR: Spoil, but beam endlessly within for him.
DWALIN: Turn, turn, and swallow metal for him.

Well, Maglor is probably my favourite of Feanor's sons, and I sympathise with all of them regarding that stupid oath their father pretty much forced on them. But it's really a coincidence that he has ended up in *so* many of my puzzles.

Urwen 06-04-2019 03:19 PM

Password: Gondolin?

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 03:25 PM

Afraid not.

Urwen 06-04-2019 03:26 PM

Is racket or disperse an anagram indicator? Also, by famous gun, do you mean a brand of gun or no?

Pervinca Took 06-04-2019 03:30 PM

It's a company that makes guns, but given that I have no interest in guns, it is only famous to me because of the title of a film.

And that is all the hints I am giving tonight. ;)

Urwen 06-04-2019 04:33 PM

Well, I found Smith and Wesson. If we remove sibilants, we have Mith and Weon......

Urwen 06-04-2019 04:44 PM

I still stand by my reasoning that #3 is Tuor, because nothing else makes sense. :p

Unless, of course, you say that 'disperse' is synonym to 'mina', in which case, my answer would be different.
