I was just wondering.. what is your favorite part in all of the Tolkien books and which you like best.

I personally like the chapter Roast Mutton in The Hobbit best. I cant stop laughing when Bert, Tom, and William are arguing. They are so stupid.. <img src=smile.gif ALT=""> And overall I think I still like The Hobbit the best.

The Sil is my favorite over-all book. But, the &quot;favorite part&quot; in all the Tolkien books that comes to mind right now is in LOTR. The part on Cirith Ungol where Sam thinks Frodo is dead and has to leave him. That part and Sam's words are SO beautifully written, it gets me every time.

The Two Towers is probably my Favorite(counted as a seperate book) as for favorite part probably Merry &amp; Pippin's adventure with the Ents up to and including the meeting with Theoden at the gates of Orthanc.

This changes every time I read LotR, but right now I have to agree with Valros Barazhor. I'm reading the part with Merry and Pippin and the Ents and I do enjoy that part a lot, particularly since the two hobbits have just escaped what seemed to be a terrible fate.

My favorite part is when the Witchking is killed. It's just so heroic, the striving against all odds to kill the withking. My favorite book right now is probably the Hobbit. I think it's still grown on me as really the book that not only introduced me to Tolkien, but to the whole world of fantasy literature. <img src=smile.gif ALT="">

Favorite Part

I was only about 12 when I first read LOTR and it took me what seemed like forever. When I reached the climactic scene at Mount Doom, it was almost like an academic achievement for having gotten through it all. To this day, the final struggle between Frodo and Gollum is my favorite scene.

Fav Part/Book

My Favourite book is definately the Sil. cos it spans thousands of years. The best parts are about the Noldorin princes, Feanor and sons, Fingolfin, Fingon, Turgon, Finrod, Orodreth and Gil-galad. The leves just speak to me alot more than the Edain do.

My favourite Prince is Finrod Felagund and did you know he was originally called Ingor Felagund, Fingolfin being called Finrod!!!

Its a pity no cohesive texts are written about the kingdoms of Arnor/Gondor during the second Age, or r there??????

So far i like the Part best when The Company had their adventures in the ines of Moria , becasue that actually got me scared!! And that been a while since book did that , actually i can't even seem to recall that that ever happened!!

Humm.. LOTR, Battle of Pelennor, or Helm's Deep, or at the Gates of Mordor (Aragorn and Gandalf, Return of the King)

In Silmarillion there is many good parts, too. Fall of Fëanor, Húrin.

My favorite part is the scouring of the shire. It is kind of cool to see the peaceful hobbits win a battle against
people.

Even though I far and away prefer the LOTR to The Hobbit, my favorite moment is from the latter.
It's during the battle of the five armies when it appears that the good guys are about to be overwhelmed, the wall comes crashing down and the dwarves charge out with the sunlight glinting off their helmets to turn the tide of the battle.
The heroic self-sacrifice gets me every time. [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]

What is before and immediatly after. Simply brilliant. It remains my favourite scene in the book.
I cannot single out any part of the trilogy for they were meant to be seen as one book and that's how I always read it.

Yes, the arrival of the Riders and the subsequent events are the most emotionally charged and the finest written, to my mind.

My favourite part of the book is when gandalf duels with the balrog or when he parlies with the mouth of sauron.

well, there are so many parts that fall into my "Favorite Scene" category...The Battle of the Pelennor Fields, The Battle of Helms Deep, Lotholorien, The Council of Elrond...etc, etc...

I can't pick a favorite book, but my favorite part in each one is:

Silmarillion: Anything with Beren in it.

Hobbit: Bilbo and Thorin talking at Thorin's death and any part with Beorn in it.

Fellowship: Tom Bombadil puts on the ring and doesn't vanish. Then calls Frodo back to the table while Frodo's wearing it, and Gandalf shouting at Pippin when he drops the stone in the well at Moria.

Two Towers: Gandalf and the rest talking with Saruman after the ents demolish Isengard. Any part with Gollum in it.

Return of the King: The struggle with Gollum and Frodo inside Mount Doom, and Gandalf meeting the Witchking at the gate.

My Favorite parts are in the Return of the King. At the very end with Bilbo and Gandalf leaving for Valinor. It is sad and exciting at the same time. Sad to see what to me had become good old friends departing from the story and exciting to think that Bilbo and Gandalf would continue to have some sort of adventures to come.

My favorite book is by far "The Simarillian." It is so beautifly written. But then again when I'm soliciting all things "Tolkien" to my friends I usually use words like "poetic" and "enchanting." The whole story of sorrow of Turin was just so moving.

I don't have a favorite book, but my favorite part is in the Silmarillion when Fingolfin fights Morgoth.

My favourite part is where Faramir and Eowyn stand together looking out from the Houses of Healing...my favourite book is the Return of the King. There's an exquisite sadness to it...so much that is good and beautiful journeying across the Sea, never to return.

Hmm, my favorite book is Silm. it is the only book that really puts into perspective the scale of it all, to bad it isn't as detailed as some of the otehr books. And my favorite part is contest of Finrod and Sauron in the Lay of Lethian.

It was so cool when The Witch King of Angmar rode into the fields, the fear and terror he struck into the hearts of men. They were in constant shadow, nothing could relieve them save the fleeting presence of Gandalf.

I personally liked Fellowship the best. Something about all the secrecy and travelling escapades really interested me in the beginning.

It's hard to find a favourite part in Tolkiens' books but the one that gets me is when the trees are destroyed in the Silmarillion. Valinor is suddenly plunged into darkness and fear and confusion is widespread until Feanor with his bright torch speaks out fiery words against the valar and a crazed mob is formed brandishing torches and marching, in their mad fever,to war against the newly renamed Morgoth in Middle-earth ignoring the pleas of the Valar.
There's something so fast about it all and something so real about the way fear was suddenly (and dangerously) converted to anger and exileration as often happens in real life. I don't think the Sil is as good as the LotR but I think it could have been, and perhaps should have been had old age and the gift of man not gotten in the way

Favorite book? Maybe "Two Towers", I don't know why.

No one has mentioned this yet, but I enjoyed The Book of Lost Tales. My favorite part, however, would have the battle before the Black Gate, when the Olog-Hai wade into battle, and wrought havoc in the ranks of the Captains of the West.

favorite part....wow thats hard. Well if i have to choose it would definatley be the part where the ents trap that good for nothing wizard in the orthanc. And when gandalf soon after takes his powers and breaks his staff.

My favourite book is LOTR, probably because I read it first. (The Hobbit was a bit of a letdown after that!)

After The Battle of the Pelennor Fields for all the reasons mentioned by others above, I really like At the Sign of the Prancing Pony.

Barliman and Nob add much-needed comic relief to a chapter that turns so black. There's the contrast of the safety, comfort and hominess of the inn and yet the dark and dangerous atmosphere of the common room with the mysterious stranger, Strider.

There is a song and dancing (oops!) There's a great description of a really good meal. (I always get very hungry reading about food or lack thereof in this book!) There's suspense about the pending attack from the Black Riders. The hobbits begin to really understand the incredible danger of their journey.

The books? A hard choice, for each has it's wonderful moments. The Sil for it's lyric beauty, the LOTR for it's grand scale and yet it's personal moments of sadness and courage and the Hobbit... for it's light hearted adventure.

I would have to choose LOTR however. I first read the trilogy when I was eleven or twelve years old. mmmm... that was thirty years ago. I have read it many times since and it always seems fresh to me and brings meaning to the things happening in my life at that moment.

My favorite parts of LOTRs? They have changed over the years. I find now that it is the moments of sadness or great personal courge that move me the most. Sam seems to have a lot of these. When he takes the Ring from Frodo at Cirith Ungol... when Sam is on the plain of Gorgoroth as Frodo sleeps and realizes that he must follow his Mr Frodo to the bitter end... when Merry hurt by the Lord of the Nazgul follows the men who carry Eowyn to the Houses of Healing and loses his way and is found by Pippin... the fall of Gandalf in Moria... and of course the Grey Havens...

These books brought healing to me when I needed it and for that I will always thank Mr Tolkien and his grand creation.

I'd have to say that my fav part is the Treason of Isengard (Book 3) the first part od the Two towers. Its got the best battles (helm's deep) and some good action overall. Other than that its the Seige of Gondor. The only problem with that is that even tho you've read the books a million times its still depressing cause it seems like everyones gonna die and the world will be an evil place. But i'd say all the books are good.

Favorite part? Cirith Ungol, Sam's search for Frodo is powerful and compelling every time.

Favorite book.. the best from a writing standpoint is the Two Towers, as the fellowship splits into smaller and smaller parts and each character takes the story on their own. It's almost symmetrical like a crystal that breaks into equal and unexpected parts, tied together by the weather and sunsets of all things. The Fellowship is wonderful, but a technically easier story to tell. The Return of the King, I think it's unique Tolkien carries the story Past the victory, but it seems he also got bored with the crowning and celebration, the visual description really tapers off until the Scouring of the Shire, which is once again as vivid as the rest of the books.

I know, I know, it's sacrilege, how dare I criticize, but my dear friends, can we not compare two roses and say one is sweeter without assuming I mean the other is just a weed?

Sam and Frodo's journey with Gollum into Mordor is for me the most compelling part of the book. The uneasy relationship between the three of them and the flashes of insight into the inner workings of Gollum's twisted mind are fascinating. Gollum as a complex character with opinions, needs, likes and dislikes becomes apparent in his interactions with the hobbits. I really begin to feel pity for Gollum, believing that he may redeem himself after all. You are never really sure of his motives in helping although you know it has something to do with the ring. The quality of the writing really brings Gollum to life here in all his sssslithering, ssslinking, sssycophantic glory.

Um, a tough one...My favourite book is -of course [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]-LotR, but there are so many parts in it that i love. For example i think the scene where Gollum sees Sam and Frodo sleeping, and for a moment turns back into a old, lonely hobbit is very touching. And Cirith Ungol, The Scouring of the Shire and Grey Havens also made their way to my list.
