Pipe Then how would you do it?

I've heard many people say how any of the scenes showing the Uruk-Hai being 'bred' are their least favorite parts in either movie. These people say it was gross. My question is: If you had to show the Uruk-Hais being 'bred', how would you do it, presuming that you HAD to include a visual of the Uruks being bred? Perhaps in a few weeks I'll post who I think had the best solution to this 'problem'. <p>[ July 08, 2003: Message edited by: The Only Real Estel ]

I just wouldn't show that part! But hey, it is Peter Jackson! He had to use up some of his horror gore somewhere right? It was gross but I bet it could have been far worse. I'd rather complain about the changes to Faramir, Arwen and the ents myself.

Seeing what the scene was, I thought they did it in the most...modest way possible, I guess if that's how it would be explained. It wasn't very gross, and I think they did a fine job of making it as real as possible without taking away from the integrity of the movie. So I wouldn't have done it any other way really. I can't complain.

Call me old-fashioned, but I would have used something called 'a script'.<P>Legolas, say, or Gimli, after some skirmish, might exclaim, "What new creation of the dark are these? They seemed like Orcs, but they are stronger, bigger..."<BR>Gandalf "Saruman is breeding a new army of Uruk Hai. They say..." (and here a look of horror crosses his face) "that he is crossing Orcs with Men..."<BR>The viewer can use his imagination for the rest...

I know what you guys mean though. But maybe PJ didn't even have to explain. He could have just had Gandalf say something like, "Saruman's new army is stronger and faster. They can move beneath the sun, blablabla..." and he wouldn't even have to mention the Orc/human thing.

Actually guys there already is a dialouge scene like that in Rivendell:<BR> Gandalf: "His treachery runs deeper then you know..."<BR> Elrond: (Eyebrows go down FURTHER!)<BR> Gandalf: By foul craft Saruman had mixed orcs with goblin men, he's breeding an army in the caverns of Isengard. One that can run in daylight ( more or less ), & cover great distances with speed. Saruman is coming for the Ring!" <BR>

Estel, I didn't remember that scene, but I'm sure you're right. "Foul craft" is a good phrase... But it would have been more memorable if Gandalf had explained something at a time when they were actually faced with the Uruks. <P>Peony, that's exactly my point! In terms of effective horror, the things people would imagine from that dialogue are actually nastier than the slimepit scene that was shown, and also more psychologically subtle. <BR>The slimepit was a bit childish I thought.

I think a visual was in order though. You don't want the movie-goers imaginations to wander TO far. You can actually end up with a MUCH worse looking mental picture if you're not careful. So, Lalalith, if you had to included a visual, what would you have in mind?

I didn't have any problems with that scene. But then, I'm not a squemish person. If you think about it, it could have been a lot worse...

I liked the scenes that show the breeding of the Uruk Hai, its interesting and any time you can give screentime to Christopher Lee is something you should strive to achieve, and scnes of Uruk Hai breeding aren't half as abhorrent as scenes with Liv Tyler in them

I didn't mind them either. It actually helped me understand what they were up against better because when I read the Fellowship I didn't get much out of it because some of the names of things confussed me. I am better at reading the books now because I know what everything is and an elvish dictionary is a great help.
