I only heard about it this morning - there was about a ten second snippet on the morning news and I had to go online to find out more. I felt pretty down all morning.

Then I thought about what he might be thinking from wherever he is in Time, and how he'd make a wise quip about it all.

The Might - his books are extremely readable due to his easy style, though you'll find your mind blown by some of the ideas he comes out with and will keep returning to things - he had a knack of making you feel quite haunted one minute and had you laughing aloud the next. Well worth looking out for!

Ah... There is a story behind that rep. One of my kiddos was browsing on e-bay and managed to find the very quirky book "Eglerio!" and bought it as a present for mom.

This was written in the seventies by two Americans, Anne Etkin and Nan Scott, who had travelled to England and managed to set up a meeting with Tolkien. JRRT was very gracious in his hospitality. The book has their personal reminiscences plus odd snatches from contemporary magazine and newspaper interviews of Tolkien, quotations I've never seen anywhere else.

At the front of the book is a dedication verse in Old English. This is the translation given:

I say that he was, among world poets,
the merriest of men, and the most beloved,
the finest of loremasters, fame most deserving.

I have been meaning to ask Squatter whether the grammar/translation is correct and if it comes from another source, but haven't done so. In any case, it caught my eye so I used it as my sig. I should probably add an acknowledgment....

Heh..I can relate. Whether my papers are five pages or eight, I always make sure not to start until around 9pm. I have a short attention span, so I usually don't finish until 7:30am, an hour before class.

Yeah...I've decided I should keep my current siggy for a while longer since it really applies to me right now. Starting tomorrow, I forsee several all-nighters for me in this coming week. Curse my bad procrastination habits! At least school is almost over (two weeks!)

I was one once upon a time in 4th grade...my team had a grand time building a structure out of balsa wood and writing a skit about computer viruses (I played the CPU!). I believe the balsa structure was the computer's hard drive and the viruses were trying to destroy it by piling weights on top (this was the point of the challenge). We alas took 4th at regionals and so didn't continue on. There wasn't enough interest to get together a team the next year, so that was my one experience...although a team from my school did win 3rd at Worlds the year before. Yes, the other teachers and I had a good laugh over it, but it's not as "nasty" as it sounds. You see, this little boy is particularly logical (in a child's way) and since I'm the one who does all the science related things with the children, he assumed I must be the smartest teacher there.
