This one might be stupid ...we'll see ... but it was inspired by the Kevin Bacon game (if you don't know it, it doesn't matter).

The rules are:
Two names are given. You must trace a connection from the first name, through various other names, to the second name. When tracing from one name to another there must have been interaction or implied interaction in the novels between the two charcters. Also, a link can me made between names if the two characters are immediately related to each other (child, parent, spouse).

Example 1:
Frodo -- Grishnakh
The answer would be:
Frodo -- Pippin (or Merry) -- Grishnakh
direct interection in all links

Frodo -- Mauhur
The answer would be:
Frodo -- Pippin (or Merry) -- Ugluk --- Mauhur
direct -- dirrect -- direct -- indirect

Example 3:
Legolas -- Bard
The answer would be:
Legolas -- Thranduil -- Bard
related -- direct intereaction

OK... with all this in mind, I'm going to ask the first question in a reply to this message. Remember... to trace from a name to a name they must have interacted, most likely interacted, or be related to each other.

NOTE: There may be more than one answer. When creating a puzzle, try to make it so there is only one way to trace between the two names. This will be tricky.

ANOTHER NOTE: Someone like Eru is not a valid link unless we are linking Valar or something. And then Eru wouldn't be necessary since the Valar all knew each other well.

YET ANOTHER NOTE: Ask for a maximum number of links to trace the difference between two characters. For instance, in the Frodo to Mauhur example you would have to figure it out using no more than 3 links. See 6 degrees of Middle-Earth - #2 for the first question limiting the number of links that can be used.

This might be stretching it, but: Ted Sandyman--Frodo--Aragorn--Ar-Pharazon

Re: 6 degrees of Middle-Earth

Ted Sandyman and Frodo never really had anything to do with each other.... they lived in the same town, but that would be about it. Now Ted and Sam had words with each other both before and after the War.

As for Aragorn's relationship with Ar-Pharazon...I was kind of meaning immediate relationships. You'd have to list all the people between the two to make that connection.

And lastly .... Eru can link to anyone if he wanted to. But not in this game.

Soooooooo .... somebody try again. We'll get it down soon and it'll be fun. I'll refurbish the rules a little.

Re: 6 degrees of Middle-Earth

That's more like it. I never thought of Aragorn through the palantir to Sauron. Good one. The answer I had in mind was:

Ted Sandyman -- Sandyman -- Gaffer -- The BlackRider -- Sauron -- Ar-Pharazon

Your turn....or anyone's turn. Whoever can come up with one, please ask it.

Re: 6 degrees of Middle-Earth

Not that good, but it works:
Turin - Thingol - Olwé - Eárwen - Galadriel - Gandalf
(guest in Doriath - brother - daughter - daughter - members of the White Council)

Alright, connect the last steward under a king of Gondor with the first steward when Gondor had a king again:

MARDIL ----- FARAMIR

Re: 6 degrees of Middle-Earth

Mardil--Earnur--Cirdan--Gandalf--Faramir
(Mardil was steward to Earnur, Earnur rode into battle with Cirdan, Cirdan and Gandalf were friends, Gandalf knew Faramir in Minas Tirith)

Re: 6 degrees of Middle-Earth

I have a shorter one. Mardil--Earnur--the Witch-king--Faramir. Mardil was Earnur's steward, The Witch-king attacked Earnur and Faramir.

Re: 6 degrees of Middle-Earth

Ben and burrahobbit, you´re both correct (somehow, at least, I like mine more, although it´s more complicated).

I´ll let "First come, first served" count, so it is your turn, bmilder.

My solution would have been:
Mardil - Earnur (the king under which Mardil was steward) - Glorfindel (who lead the Rivendell army which helped Earnur) - the Witch King (whom Glorfindel fought and for whom he made the prophecy) - Èowyn (who fulfilled the prophecy by killing the Witch King) - Faramir (her husband).
Maybe I should have checked if there were no easier versions...

Re: 6 degrees of Middle-Earth

Well there are probably a lot of solutions for each one!

Ok, um...

Link Manwe to Gollum.

I can think of one with three in between them.

Re: 6 degrees of Middle-Earth

Oh, you got fewer than I did!

I had Manwe--Melkor--Ungoliant--Shelob--Gollum
You're right, there's just too many combinations. If only there were an IMDb for LotR characters...
