Ring Who was Ringbearer the shortest amount of time?

"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."

Who had the ring the least time? The way I read it, it would be Deagol, then Samwise, unless you count Tom Bombadil holding it for a moment, or Gandalf when he threw it into the fire at Frodo's, or Gollum on his second possesion of the Ring. Then there was Isildur at 2 years.

Of course Sauron held it the longest. I am trying to figure which held it longer, Frodo or Bilbo?

Since I would not count Tom B. or Gandalf as Bearers of the One Ring, I would say Deagol, though I don't know if he could be counted as a Ring Bearer either.

Frodo had the Ring for less time than Bilbo. Bilbo had it for 60 years, but Frodo only had it for 17 years.

Well, Bilbo had it way longer than Frodo. Bilbo had it for 60 years and frodo had it either 17 or 18 years. Sam probly had it the shortest amount of time cause you can't really say that deagol was a ring-bearer because he never even wore it. And the ring never belonged to Tom Bombadil. He just had it for like 2 seconds.

Question

So then this brings up more questions... do you have to wear it to actually be the bearer of the One Ring? If so, then you would have to count Tom as he did have it, and he did put it on. As for the question of belonging, I say it belonged to Sauron alone because it was he who made it and poured himself into it, and it was evermore trying to get back to him.

I would count Deagol as a ringbearer even if he didn't put it on (which we don't know if he did or not) because if it wasn't for him finding it at the bottom of the Anduin, Smeagol wouldn't of ever had it.

Interesting thread with some good points, but unfortunatly it has too much 'movie' in it. It would be nice to once again have book discussions on what is actually in the book without movie interjections.

I think Toms handling of the ring was to show his oddity in its lack of effect on him, so wouldn't really be a "ringbearer". Also, Frodo's willingness to give it to Tom was an oddity too.

Sam is definitly a ringbearer since he used it to gain access to Cirith Ungol unseen.

Lots of good thoughts on this to be had.

i think snowdog is right

tom bombadil only held the ring he was not the ringbearer.

according to facts of the books i think master samwise hamfast was the ringbearer for the shortest period of time
