I have recently read lord of the rings and i feel that the book doesn't explicitly state the powers of the 3 elven rings. The ring worn by galadriel particularly interests me.Did that ring help cresate the gardens of lothlorien?

Welcome! We know that in general the Three had powers of a healing and preserving nature, but we don't get much else. Narya, the Ring carried by Gandalf enhanced his spirit and helped give him the strength and endurance to see his errand through.
As for Nenya,I think Lórien predates its creation, but with it Galadriel made Lórien stronger and more beautiful.

I think what the ring did was strengthen what was there, and preserve it after it should have faded, thus the quick fading with the passing of the ring. this is just opinion, though...

There is a theory which states that if anyone ever discovers exactly what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.</p></p>

<img src="http://www.barrowdowns.com/images/posticons/nenya.jpg" align=absmiddle> Re: galadriel

Two quotes from the Silmarillion:
Now these were the Three that had last been made, and they possessed the greatest powers. Narya, Nenya, and Vilya, they were named, the Rings of Fire, and of Water, and of Air, set with ruby and adamant and sapphire; and of all the Elven-rings Sauron most desired to possess them, for those who had them in their keeping could ward off the decays of time and postpone the weariness of the world. But Sauron could not discover them, for they were given into the hands of the Wise, who concealed them and never again used them openly while Sauron kept the Ruling Ring. Therefore the Three remained unsullied, for they were forged by Celebrimbor alone, and the hand of Sauron had never touched them; yet they also were subject to the One.

Of the Three Rings that the Elves had preserved unsullied no open word was ever spoken among the Wise, and few even of the Eldar knew where they were bestowed. Yet after the fall of Sauron their power was ever at work, and where they abode there mirth also dwelt and all things were unstained by the griefs of time. Therefore ere the Third Age was ended the Elves perceived that the Ring of Sapphire was with Elrond, in the fair valley of Rivendell, upon whose house the stars of heaven most brightly shone; whereas the Ring of Adamant was in the Land of Lórien where dwelt the Lady Galadriel. A queen she was of the woodland Elves, the wife of Celeborn of Doriath, yet she herself was of the Noldor and remembered the Day before days in Valinor, and she was the mightiest and fairest of all the Elves that remained in Middle-earth. But the Red Ring remained hidden until the end, and none save Elrond and Galadriel and Círdan knew to whom it had been committed.
Thus it was that in two domains the bliss and beauty of the Elves remained still undiminished while that Age endured: in Imladris; and in Lothlórien, the hidden land between Celebrant and Anduin, where the trees bore flowers of gold and no Orc or evil thing dared ever come. Yet many voices were heard among the Elves foreboding that, if Sauron should come again, then either he would find the Ruling Ring that was lost, or at the best his enemies would discover it and destroy it; but in either chance the powers of the Three must then fail and all things maintained by them must fade, and so the Elves should pass into the twilight and the Dominion of Men begin.
And so indeed it has since befallen: the One and the Seven and the Nine are destroyed; and the Three have passed away, and with them the Third Age is ended, and the Tales of the Eldar in Middle-earth draw to their close.

<blockquote>Quote:<hr> The elvenrings were created in a long gone time when the beauty of ME was at his top.<hr></blockquote>

The Three elven Rings were made in the middle of the Second Age of the Sun. As Earendilyon correctly quotes from SILM - to ward off the decays of time and postpone the weariness of the world. The reason (I belive) they were made was that Celebrimbor and the rest of the elves already felt the weariness of time and the burden of Arda. And tried to mend that weriness. At least Galadriel who had lived in Beleriand and the bliss of Valinor didn't think of ME in the Second Age as on &quot;its top&quot;.

<blockquote>Quote:<hr> Lorien could only exist cause of the ring.<hr></blockquote>

Lorien existed before the The Tree were made. The power Nenya had over Lorien while Galadriel yielded it would however be destroyed when the One Ring was unmade. When this power was removed from Lorien, the elves that had dwelt in protection and bliss of Nenya departed over the Sea. Lorien ceased to exist because the elves grew weary of the world and left.

P.S. The above quotes was made by Headbanger, but unfortunatly his signature picture made some problems with the layout of the topic, and his post have been deleted.

Preservation, wisdom and perception I think are the three main qualities of the rings. Gandalf also used his to inflame the emotions of and put thoughts into other's minds, although he was already skilled at that...

Galadriel used hers at one point in UT to form a mist that covered the riding of the Eothed (sp? I haven't read that in a while) and the ring's power was also evident when we look at Lorien - like Rivendell and the Grey Havens, it never withered and remained a sanctuary (not sure if someone has already pointed this out...excuse me if that is so, I'm too lazy to read all the posts <img src=biggrin.gif ALT=""> )

Where did Cirdan get the Ring of Fire from? I know he gave it to Gandalf, but not who gave it to him. Or did Celebrimbor give it to him right after its making?

P.S. If this information is in the Sill, tell me so and do not answer the questions. <img src=smile.gif ALT="">

From the History of Galadriel and Celeborn in Unfinished Tales:

<blockquote>Quote:<hr> At this time the first Council was held, and it was there determined that an Elvish stronghold in the east of Eriador should be maintained at Imladris rather than in Eregion. At that time also, Gil-galad gave Vilya, the Blue Ring to Elrond, and appointed him to be his vice-regent in Eriador; but the Red Ring he kept, until he gave it to Círdan when he set out from Lindon in the days of the Last Alliance. <hr></blockquote>

but, if you go back a few pages you read this:

<blockquote>Quote:<hr> Sauron himself departed from Eregion about the year 1500, after the Mírdain had begun the making of the Rings of Power. Now Celebrimbor was not corrupted in heart or faith, but he accepted Sauron as what he posed to be; and when at length he discovered the existence of the One Ring he revolted against Sauron, and went to Lórinand to take counsel once more with Galadriel. They should have destroyed all the Rings of Power at this time, &quot;but they failed to find the strength&quot;. Galadriel counselled him that the Three Rings of the Elves should be hidden, never used, and dispersed, far from Eregion where Sauron believed them to be. It was at this time that she received Nenya, the White Ring, from Celebrimbor, and by its power the realm of Lórinand was strengthened and made beautiful; but its power upon her was great also and unforseen, for it increased her latent desire for the Sea and for return into the West, so that her joy in Middle-earth was diminished. Celebrimbor followed her counsel that the Ring of Air and the Ring of Fire should be sent out of Eregion; and he entrusted them to Gil-galad in Lindon. (It is said here that at this time that Gil-galad gave Narya, the Red Ring, to Círdan Lord of the Havens, but later in the narrative there is a marginal note that he kept it himself until he set out for the War of the Last Alliance.) <hr></blockquote>

Yes, UT counts too <img src=smile.gif ALT=""> Sorry Amandil, but I didnt read what you wrote. Whenever I read such good books as these, I never read anything ahead and never read any short descriptions of what will happen in the book. It was hard not looking on the back of the books when I read LOTR <img src=smile.gif ALT=""> And I had to pick sections that I didnt want to read in the Prelude so as to keep from learning anything about the books.

Nenya- forged of mithril and and a stone of adamant (correct me if I'm wrong- power over air etc, but I'm not sure it was Galadriel's power or the power of her ring that the Mirror of Galadriel worked from.

<img src="http://www.barrowdowns.com/images/posticons/nenya.jpg" align=absmiddle> the mirror of galadriel and the palantari

The mirror of Galadriel functioned in some ways similarly to the palantiri, which were of course created and used w/ out rings so I would ascribe the bulk of the Mirrors powers if not all to Galadriel's Noldorin skills.

Lindil is oft found on posting on the Silmarillion Project at the Barrowdowns and working on yet a 2nd new Elven/Christian discussion board<a href="http://pub72.ezboard.com/bosanwe" >Osanwe</a> 'The dwindling Men of the West would often sit up late into the night, and awaken early before dawn- exchanging lore and wisdom such as they possessed , so that they should not fall back into the mean and low estate of those , who never knew or more sadly still, had indeed rebelled against the Light.' </p>

Interesting to note that Of the Rings of Power also doesn't entirely correspond with the chapter about the Istaru from UT.

&quot; But the Red Ring remained hidden until the end, and none save Elrond and Galadriel and Círdan knew to whom it had been committed.

Yet UT mentions in Of the Istari that Saruman also quickly found out that Gandalf also had the Red Ring and that it was the start of his envy and his dislike for G.

"In those days the Noldor still roamed the Hither Lands, Mightiest among the Children of Iluvatar, fair and tall and their beautiful voices were still heard by mere mortals"</p>

Galadriels ring was of adement and water it did help stop lothlorien ageing thus keeping it a secret from the dark lord.
the 3 rings were held by gandalf elrond and galadriel gandalfs was fire and helped him on his task. Elronds was i think earth. it helped keep riverndale a secret from the Dark lord. However all rings relied on the exsistance of the one ring, however if sauron got back the one ring he was too powerfull for galadriel to keep away from lothlorien.
