Bandobras "Bullroarer" Took famously defeated an orc invasion of the Shire, killing its leader in personal combat. Where and when was this celebrated battle? Who was the slain orc-chieftain? Whence came these orcs?

Re: Trivia

Golfimbul led the orc out of the Misty Mountains and out into Eriador as far as the Shire. 'Bullroarer' met and defeated the goblin at The Battle of Greenfields.

Re: Trivia

Yes but not quite complete. When was the battle of Greenfields? Also, there was a more specific putative place of origin for the orcs.

Just so! Ask us! (And where did I learn Mt. Gram? That and Gundabad are stuck in my memory, but I've forgotten where in the narrative they are related.)

Bilbo told of Bandobras and the goblins of Mt Gram to prove to Thorin (and himself) that he and his kin were of stouter stuff than the Dwarves thought!

What a commendably self-effacing administrator. "I thought someone else might like to answer it" clearly signifies that a question is beneath old Kittle's notice. Lucky that old Galpsi isn't touchy. I think I'm gonna go get drunk, too.

p.s. yes -- about the offspring.

Ouch! That stings!

If I go answering all the questions on the board (as if I could ... heh ) then no one would want to play.

Re: Oops..my turn..Here's another Q...

Cotton's farm was in the South Lane of Bywater. The Ivy Bush was on the Bywater Road. If you think of both of these as outside of the Hobbiton, then surely the Hobbiton Post-Office counts?

Nope it doesn't. Though there might have been a post office in Hobbiton, it was certainly never mentioned.

Re: Oops..my turn..Here's another Q...

It most CERTAINLY was. In my Ballantine ppbk., vol. 1, p. 49, bottom of page:

Quote:
"Before long the invitations began pouring out, and the Hobbiton post-office was blocked, and the Bywater post-office was snowed under, and voluntary assistant postmen were called for."

I'll accept your apology if it is sufficiently abject.
yours triumphantly,
etc.

Here's proof:

"The Old Grange on the west side had been knocked down, and its place taken by rows of tarred sheds."

Oops ....

The Grange was the answer I was looking for. Leave it to 'galloping galpsi' to know exactly where to find the proof that I'm a knucklehead.

Of course the Hobbiton post-office might have just been a spot near the road where letters were pile for people to sort through, and thus not a structure. But I'll accept it anyways.

Re: Oops..my turn..Here's another Q...

Welcome Bullroarer!
Frankly, I say common courtesy alone dictates that the newly arrived should ask us a question in lieu of the much-deplored galpsi.
Anyhow, I'm not sure that:

Quote:
Of course the Hobbiton post-office might have just been a spot near the road where letters were pile for people to sort through, and thus not a structure,

constitutes the degree of abject self-abasement which my impossibly-inflated ego requires during this, my season of triumph.

"Thus not a structure," indeed!

If by vulcans you simply mean remarkable smiths, then the best were all at Imladris. If you don't mean smiths, I have no idea what you're talking about.

I shouldn“t ask questions at night.
Of course I mean "volcanoes".

Amon Amarth is obvious. I suppose that the other two are Thangorordrim and Meneltarma. Both gushed smoke and fire upon occasion. (Dagor Bragollach devastated Dor-nu-Fauglith; Meneltarma burst during the downfall of Numenor.) Arguably Thangorodrim was a built thing, but if so, it was built upon volcanic activity in the Ered Engrin.

Yep, these were exactly the ones I meant.

An answer I would have accepted at a pinch would have been "the one Maedhros threw himself in", though we neither nor the name or place of this one, or even whether it actually was a vulcano (I do not think so).
The vulcanoes of Thangorodrim may have had other names, too, but we cannot know them anyway.

According to the Red Book, when did Gandalf first intervene in Shire affairs?
