Since it´s my first question, i´ll make an easy one: what item warns the dwarfs of Erebor from any enemy attack?

Just happened to pop in at the right time. OK, other than the One Ring, which of the Rings of Power had no gemstones?

Sweet! I guess it's just you and me on this thread, Mithaden! Okay. This one might actually bring more people in.

Name all of the "Hills" in Tolkien's works. When I say Hills, I mean a name starting with Amon. Name all the Amons, as it were. I count 11.

First one to get all 11, or the most, posts the next one.

Edit: Oops...is a hill an item? Oh well.

I can give you three more off the top of my head.
Amon Anwar (Hill of Awe, where the tomb of Elendil was placed)
Amon Ereb (Hill in the Silmarillion where Denethor (the elf) died)
Amon Obel (Hill in Brethil where the Haladin lived)

Good question, by the way!

Thanks, V.

Ok, I was not thinking of Anwar, so that is 12 now. The other two are correct, so we still have 3 to go that I can think of.

On a side note: Amon Lhaw, spelled with the H. Just FYI.

I want to add another Amon to the list:
Lanc (which was later called Dol Gundur)
P.S: Jes, thanks for the correction

Edit: I´ve just remembered Amon Gwareth (Gondolin was built upon it)

Re: Items In Middle Earth

Okay, I wasn't thinking of that one, either. I think that's because I know it as Dol Guldur (that's what you meant, right?) and I have never heard it referred to as Amon Lanc. But, nevertheless, there are still 3 more to go that I am thinking of. We can stop soon, but let's see if anyone else wants to play. This is educational.

Side note: Amon Hen is the Hill of Sight.

Edit: Good job, Grond, Gwareth is one of those I was thinking of. We are down to 2 to go!

That is another one! Just 1 to go! Hmm...a clue, eh? This one is a little more...obscure I think. It was in RotK, and it means 'mount ever-snow-white'. Okay, if that doesn't do it, nothing will...give me the Amon name for it and we'll be done.

Unless anyone thinks it unfair, we'll say that whoever gets this one, can post the next question.

The region is close.
But the connection "quite stupid - North European language" certainly would have earned you a grim glance by JRRT.

Re: Items In Middle Earth

getting even closer... but Norwegian had changed a lot since older days compared to the 'ideal' language JRRT thought of. Maybe Norwegian did not have the air of myth which the tongue in question possesses... the names of the dwarves and of Gandalf are taken from a source in this respective language, this might be a reaso why JRRT was so delighted in his late days to here "The Hobbit" got translated.

I have always believed that Tolkien took the names of the dwarves from some German book with dealed with a Ring or something like that. So, is German the answer?

Re: Items In Middle Earth

Yes, that is it.
Some weeks befpre he died, JRRT wrote to Ungfrú Adhalsteindottir that he had long hoped for an Icelandic translation, "a language which I think would fit it better than any other I have any adequate knowledge of".
Ask, Voronwe!

Re: Items In Middle Earth

I'll try another Language question, though I'm sure it will be easier than the last!

On what two real languages did Tolkien base Quenya and Sindarin?

Re: Items In Middle Earth

Tolkien did indeed base Sindarin on Welsh. However, Quenya wasn't based on Icelandic.
