Or do you mean all three of them? Sorry. <img src=rolleyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes"> . Ecthelion slew and was slain by Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, and GLorfindel fell in the passes of the Echoriath in combat with a Balrog. In fact everyone who ever slew a Balrog, Maia or Elda, died themselves in the act.

Re: Simple questions to answer without looking at

At the time you asked that, Durelin, almost half; but not now. I seem to be suffering a spasm of Quiz Room avoidance at the moment (which I believe is passing as we speak).

Alright, sorry for the delay; a rune appears in my sig. Taking a logical and INFORMED guess, why is it in my sig at all, and what alphabet does it come from?

Runes in Sigs

As there are only two scripts named by Tolkien, the Tengwar and the Cirth, (and your rune is clearly not Tengwar,) it is the Certhas Daeron that should hold correct as for the alphabet. On further inspection it can be found (esp. in App E of LotR) that that rune represents the sound 'gw' and because you are Gwaihir, it is obvious why the first distinct 'sound' in your name should appear in your sig <img src=wink.gif ALT=""> PS I hope that is informed enough to meet your demand <img src=smile.gif ALT="">

From this citation, Ugluk can be seen as a coward from two reasons. What are they?

In this word-duell with Grishnakh, he relies on the help of his fellow orc soldiers ('We'). Besides, it was most probably not him who slew Boromir, or took the prisoners (who are only hobbits anyway).

I had that there were dozens of Orcs onto the Great Warrior, and many of them wer slain, twenty or thereabouts, before the Orcs succeeded in slaying him; also that so many Orcs onto two untrained Hobbits is quite out-numbering the Hobbits. But your answer is fine. Ask away!

The sig is from 'Aldarion and Erendis', one of my favouite stories, not least because it is the only tale of Numemor in the days of its glory. I only wish that Tolkien had finished it.

I'll wait and see if anyone else gets this question before I post a clue.

Re: Pipes

That is a tricky one. I suppose it is somewhere where the hobbits are given a pipe or whatnot by Gandalf; but in the meantime I shall take a wild guess. Wood? <img src=ohwell.gif ALT=":/">

Ahah!

Bronze? Gold? Silver? Copper? Tin? Carbon? Hafnium? Xenon? Ai! Don't ask me what those are. I looked at a periodic table. <img src=wink.gif ALT=""> Let's all keep at the guessing, someone will get it eventually! Btw, there is an element called Ununoctium. And a whole lot of Unun- type elements. Periodic tables freak me out <img src=eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Re: Ahah!

I think all those are just generic names for elements that they haven't created in a lab or haven't found naturally yet.

Re: Ahah!

I have a feeling this is too easy, but:

Where did Tolkien find the names Durin, Thrain, Bifur, Bombur, Nori, Fili and Kili? (And Gandalf too I think).

Hey enep, how many elements were in the periodic table you saw? There were 112 when I was in HS, it's probably up to 200 by now.

Re: Ahah!

I cannot remember having read those names in the Elder or Poetic Edda by Snorri Sturlosson (except for Gandalf), however I do think that this is what you mean, isn't it?

<h6>'Spring is all around you / and calls your name softly in the wind / Burning when the day is dying / she kills the rays of a boundless sun. / And falls after years of death / eternally on your tears of joy. / So feel, feel the hands of glory / that will lead you into a golden sea.' (Kirlian Camera, 'Ascension') </h6></p>
