Question Am I correct in thinking

That Aragorn is related very distantly to Boromir, Faramir, Denethor etc. ?

- Sorry if this has come up before, but I'm curious and it appears to me (from what I have read in the appendices) that they are related.

really good question this is one topic that i do a lot of research on, and so far i have found that aragorn is marrying back into his own family: arwen is his 41st cousin. hes also related to eomer/eowyn, if u count back from his father to his great-grandfather x 49, who also has the rohirrim as his decendants.

but as for the stewards... id say most likely yes, but i havent yet figured out how

hopefully someone else has the answer? id like to know to

I don't have the answer but your research sounds very interesting. I Would presume that Aragorn is distantly related but you never know .

You are absolutely correct in thinking, Dark Shadow. It would be a pity if you didn't!

Actally, Meela, it would be more like 73 (25 generations of Númenórean kings + 49 of Dúnedain chieftans).

I don't believe that they are related anymore than you and I are. Just because they're Númenórean doesn't mean they're related. They could be members of different Houses of Men entirely.

All joshing aside, I think that Aragorn is more than distantly related to Boromir and Faramir. I don't remember exactly how, though. I'll have to look that up now.

Whoa, Aragorn is Arwen's 41st cousin? I knew they were cousins, but I didn't know it was that far apart. Could it be possible that people today marry their 41st cousins without them knowing it?

Well, if you live in a small mountain town where nealy everybody is related, yeah. I use to live in West Virginia, so I would know.

Sorry, off topic. I think it is likely that they are related, but not that closely.

I think they aren't closely-enough related to be related. I think scientists actually went back and pinpointed that everyone comes from one female who lived millions of years ago, so if you're being extreme, we're all related. The same is the case here: if you're being extreme they probably are somewhere along the line. Did that make any sense at all?

On an off-note: I live in a small town where everyone's related practically. But I haven't seen anyone in this town marry someone they met in this town.

Sorry, i don't know if Aragorn is related to Boromir. I have a related question. Hope you don't mind.

I am reading TTT again and in it, Legolas mentioned something about Aragorn being in the same lineage as Luthien. Isn't Arwen a descendant of Luthien also?

Yes, Arwen is descended from Luthien and so is Aragorn. Elrond is Aragorn's many-times-great-uncle because his brother Elros was the first king of Numenor and Aragorn's ancestor (check this in the Appendices). Elros and Elrond's Mum was Elwing, who was the grand-daughter of Beren and Luthien. So Luthien was Arwen's great-great grandmother.
Anyone ever noticed how inbred they get in Middle-earth? : - )

Ok, I just found my RotK book, and I've been looking at my list of Numenorean Kings. They are both descendednts of Elendil (?) and so that would make them very distantly related. But loooking at how many names there are (over a page on the side of the stewards) it probably isn't thought of a being related. But had Aragorn been killed... would Faramir have become king? I mean Aragorn is the heir of Isildur, who was son of Elendil, and Faramir is a descendant of Elendil...

Where does it state that Denethor or his sons were desendants of Elendil? Their line has been passed on form Mardil, and they were said to be of a high Numenorean house.

Presumably there would have been a closer relative, with greater right to claim the Kingship, amongst the Dunedain of the North.

As for the marrying of cousins; Teddy and Elanor Roosevelt were 4th cousins, so 41st cousins is NO PROBLEM.

Galadriel and Celeborn were second cousins, even. Not a big deal for elves, though.
