Name the open heath-country which lay between southern Eriador and the Isen.

Good stb, but no. Dunland is an eastern corner of this land. It is distinct from this land as being more "hill and dale country" and less "open heath."

"Swertings" was (according to Sam) a hobbitish reference for Southrons. Perhaps "swarthy-ones" does it in modern English. I assume moon-land is Ithilian (and a nice play on sun-land). The swertings Sam encountered in Ithilian had some war-mumakil which Sam called "oliphaunts."

I hope you will pardon my absence. Perhaps I can redeem myself. Caras Galadon was entered from the South, though the Fellowship first approached it from the North.

The Lossoth 'Snow-People' of the Third Age were descended from the Forodwaith of the First Age.

What was distinctive about the appearance of the men of Lossarnach among the people of Gondor?

Yes, I think, although "swarthy" and "dark" make odd antonyms. I always assumed that the Dunedain were fairer-skinned, even if dark-haired. But you got the very epithets I sought. (And don't tell me that JRRT didn't have the predjudices of his time and place.) Ask us!
