I still don't get just why he gave it over to the otherside. Why would he? It made no sense to me and still doesn't. Can someone explain this to me?

Re: A question about Bilbo and the Arkenstone

Bilbo knew rightly that Thorin treasured the Arkenstone above all other treasures. The hobbit knew that the stubborn Dwarf would forsake is senseless (and hopeless) defense of the treasure in exchange for the stone. Bilbo was trying to stop a war that would have been short and ugly for the 13 Dwarves.

Yes, I think Bilbo was all to nice to see the battle. However, Dain's dwarves did arrive so you don't know how the battle would ended. And you can't know if Gandalf had some nice trick, or if he just know that Bilbo would save the day. It was probably his sixth hobbit-sense that made him pick up the Arkenstone in the first place. I think that hobbits have an extra sense for making everything good in the end so everyone gets home in time for dinner.

Hm, I think you are right there.
Bilbo was basically being an all round nice guy, not only did he try his best to stop the war from happening, (and all could have been lost if the goblins had come upon the dwarves, men and elves fighting each other...) but he remained loyal to Thorin and co, by returning to them even though he knew he's get grief from them when they found out. Bilbo seemed to want to get the argument over with, he didn't care much for being stuck in the mountain. He was willing to sacrifice his share to bring peace. Then he could go home to his Hobbit Hole.
