Sting What happened to Beorn?

I can't remember Beorn being in LOTR. (If I'm wrong then please don't shun me for ignorance) Can anyone tell me? I'd like to know what became of him because the guy's a legend.
This site, by the way, is totally amazing.
Kudos!

He is only mentioned a couple of times by name. Can't remember exactly where though.

Beorn would be dead by the time of LOTR. Even though he is "a shape-shifter and no doubt a big of a magician" Tolkien states that he is human.

His son was ruling the Beornings by the time of the Fellowship.

1420!

Grimbeorn the Old was the son of Beorn. He ruled the Beornings, woodsmen distantly related to the Rohirrim and the men of Dale, during the time of LOTR.

I'm not sure about Beorn's human status. Isn't there something in Music of the Ainur or elsewhere that mentions how the Beornings and Ents were allowed to be created for Yavanna's sake, to protect animals and growing things respectively?

I know I read somewhere that Tolkien stated Beorn is human, I want to thnk it was in the letters or something. Someone more knowlegeble on Tolkiens works could give more specifics.

Here we go:

In Letter 144 JRRT said:
"Though a skin-changer and no doubt a bit of a magician, Beorn was a Man."
