If you could choose any character from ME for the Fellowship of the Ring...who would it be?

Those that were alive and in ME during the council of Elrond...

Legolas son of Thranduil
Aragorn son of Arathorn
Treebeard of Fangorn

From what I can guess, my understanding is that we are supposed to choose our own "Dream Fellowship" from anyone in Middle Earth (or from the First Age as well?). I certainly wouldn't pick Fëanor for the Fellowship! I can see him now..."the Ring is mine, through my grandson Celebrimbor, who SHOULD own it, for it was the Elves who began..." etc. etc., leaving out Annatar completely or relegating him to the status of presumptous imitator...

Ah, yes, this was supposed to be a Dream Fellowship. I guess that would be the "Nightmare Fellowship!" Honestly, I don't think they could have done much better than they did. I disagree with those who say that Glorfindel or another great elf (greater than Legolas, let's say) should have gone. I think it was balanced perfectly, the way it should be!

Cheers,
Lyta

P.S. All that aside, I would LOVE to have Huan along!

A quick correction on your initial post, Willkill: I do not believe Thorin Oakenshield was alive during the Council of Elrond.

I would probably have chosen Faramir and Glorfindel for the Fellowship if I had the opportunity. In the unlikely event that heroes of earlier days could have partaken in the events of the War of the Ring, I would choose Finrod (for his loyalty and determination, as evidenced by his battle with the werewolf to save Beren's life) and Fingolfin for his bravery (need I say more than that he challenged Morgoth?).

A interesting addition which you failed to mention would be Ar-Pharazon.

I don't think he did it out of courage. I thought it said he was so angry that he rode up to the gates of Angband and challenged Morgoth??? Anger makes you do crazy things.

I think that any King who saw everyone getting their butts kicked would have gotten that angry! Although reading that scene in the Silmarillion did give me a few laughs!

I think that Fëanor and Ar-Pharazon should definitely join the Fellowship just because they'd bicker so much that poor Sauron would probably get so confused that he'd surrender just to get the two guys to shut up!

Um, to answer that really random question:

I think Denethor should have minded his own business in the movie, and Boromir shouldn't have been such a blockhead in the book [no offense, my love] and let Faramir go to the Fellowship. He wouldn't have died, probably, though Merry and Pippin might have.

Merry and Pip wouldn't have died if they were to die to would have been killed after Boromir. Frodo and Sam would've pro'ably left anyway. But the fellowship would be in 3 parts not 4. And not to be off topic. My dream Fellowship would be.

-Aragorn
-Gandalf
-Frodo
-Sam
-Glorfindel
-Turin
-Feanor
-Finrod

P.S-By 4 parts I mean, Frodo & Sam, The three hunters, Merry Pip and Boromir, the halls of Mandos. I'm just a bit crazy but its not that bad.

I'd probably switch Boromir and Faramir, and myself with Legolas.

You are all off topic! Obviously, The Drean Fellowship was the group of campaign advisors who, in the late Third Age, sought to get one Huándrád Drean elected to Stewerdship of Gondor. Little is told of him (though a summary of his life can be found in the Nether Appendix of Book 12 of HoMEy) because the Fellowship was broken upon the Return of the King and Drean went back to whatever he was doing before the War of the Ring.

Hehe! I agree with Lyta_Underhill, the Fellowship is perfectly balanced. But I would love to have Radagast and Huan there. I don't think I could replace anyone, though, so it would have to become the Eleven Walkers! Maybe the two of them could have gotten there in time to save Boromir... ::sigh:: ...Now THAT would be my dream Fellowship - one in which Boromir doesn't die!

Interesting thread. I had no idea of its existence.

But for that matter, this might be slightly relevant - in any case, it shows at least something about one possibility:

This thread and this thread.

(For those who find it interesting, I suggest also checking some of the last pages of the first thread. It's worth it. You'll get to see some very interesting... visualisation of the matter.)
