Silmaril Unfinnished Tales

Well after all these years of reading The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Silmarillion (just twice though, the second time I used the Atlas of Middle Earth as a companion book) I FINALLY found a nice harcover version of Unfinnished Tales. Now I can delve a little deeper into the lore of Middle Earth. Wish me luck!

When you first read the LOTR and then read the SILM, the SILM makes you go: 'ohh so that why...' 'ohh and that explains...' and ' My, why didn't I think of that?'.
Unfinished Tales has much the same effect on SILM when you read it afterwards. I do wish you luck and I do envy you - you are going to a cool place for the first time

My favourite section is "The Hunt for the Ring."

I liked the Druadan/Pukel men section of UF, its been too long since I've read that book. Its really a shame the end to the Fall of Gondolin isn't written, the begining from the UT is awsome.

Thingol : "its really a shame the end to the Fall of Gondolin isn't
written,"

lindil: tell that to the 'translations from the Elvish' project members!!

Telchar is quite right though in encouraging your forst UT read Maltagaerion.
I some ways i enjoy the side paths and elaborations such as the Narn and palantir and Istari and such- more than the 'Quenta Silm' [i.e. shortned and official versions of CRT's Silm].

If you enjoy UT then ypu will also love the omitted UT like material in Morgoth's Ring, War of the Jewels and Peoples of Middle -Earth - all of which is Tolkiens later Silm work from which UT was drawn - not too mention the awesome essay 'Osanwe-Kenta' available from the journal Vinyar Tengwar.

all of the above [inc. UT] which we hope to include in a full length 'translations from the Elvish' is, I feel JRRT's best and most mature work , surpassing the LotR in terms of writing and beauty, and that's something.

btw I too love reading Silm and UT in the old HB [dark and olive green respectively] it adds much to the experience compared to the hardbackds.

Enjoy-

lindil, are you guys actually going to write in narrative form, like Tolkien wrote about the journey of Tuor, or are you just writing a summary, similiar to how the fall of Gondolin appears in the Silm (With more info of coarse)? I've said it before, but I'll say it again, you all really know your stuff in there I keep meaning to read the HoME series, I've read Morgoth's Ring, but I've been busy lately with colleges and midterms and I don't want to buy the 3 volume addition off Amazon for 100 bucks a volume.

The goal is to incorporate all of the omitted/unfinished / newly discovered /archaic, etc material available in HoME/UT/VT etc. w/ an absolute minimum of editing, and no real 'creative writing' or fan-fictionalizing as we call it. So that in some sense it will be as legitamate as CRt's [except we are not literary executor's and/or sons ] but will include everything possible where as CRT put in his Silm pretty much the bare minimum.
The going is very slow becuause the issues are very convoluted and difficult and there are a number of legitamete ways to approach the material and each member represents one of them!

Thingol: I don't want to buy the 3 volume addition off Amazon for 100 bucks a volume.
Lindil: don't blame you , tr6y the many used bookstores in NY [?] and you will eventually see all of hoME in HB - be sure to check literature sections and not just sci-fi/fantasy. I usually see them for 10-15 $ each. And feel free to pick me up a spare HB lays of Beleriand , the only non LotR HoME vol. I am missing!
