Well I am not sure, but I have ever since I remember wished I had lived in the middle ages ( I am european ), because I love the old castles, knights, armours, swords etc...
So why not, I think I would have been carried away with the whole thing and gone on with the quest. In whose shoes ? Now that is another question.......

Legolas or Aragorn, or maybe Merry, I would have liked to ride with Eowyn.

I agree with Gamgie on most things. I too love the middle ages and have made it one of my personal studys. I would have gone with Frodo if only to help ease his burden as Sam did. I would also give alot to hvave been in Eowyns, place even to go though all she did i would have done it. I also like medieval weaponry and (if I do say so my self) am not bad at shooting a bow or handling a sword. I however agree with Red about the ibuprofen though.<img src=smile.gif ALT="

I dream of things like going on quests(call it youthful idealism) so of course I would go, in a moment and without a second thought. The adventure of it all sounds so great, winning honor in foreign lands, fighting for the side of good, it's just all so appealing. So yes, I would in fact have gone on the Ring Bearer's quest, and would have loved every second of it(except for the parts with monsters and dark scary places, and i probably wouldn't enjoy any prospect of danger, but hey, it's all part of the adventure).

As I said above, Yes I would have gone as I like the medieval times. I would especially have liked to witness the Siege of Gondor and the attack of the Rohan knights.

I actually never got to answer this before, sadly (and surprisingly). And, another point, equally as sad, is that no, I would not have gone with the Fellowship, given the choice. I have neither the courage nor the strength that it would have taken to go on such a demanding quest. Most likely, I would have hindered the company anyway, hopefully, for their sake, dying early on to spare them my companionship.

If you think about it, although we dream of romantic quests such as that, most of us would not be equipped for an ordeal such as the one the nine companions went on. We have our televisions, airplanes, air-conditioning, cars, and all those other conveniences that have made us soft these days. I am sure there are some out there that could undertake the quest, but I know that I, for one, am a product of my generation and would never be able to survive the trek to Mount Doom or anywhere else dangerous, most likely.

With friends to whom I was loyal, and also before whom I didn't want to seem a coward--yes.

There's also something about reaching a "point of no return," when you really can't change your mind, that screws your courage to the sticking point. Canoeing whitewater and giving birth are two examples of when I was scared out of my mind inside, but had to keep going no matter what. (Hey, there were no epidurals in my day--it was Lamaze or screaming!)

Things are easier said than done. I like to think that I would have left in an instant to protect the land and people I love, but it's actually leaving the people and land I love that's the problem. Could anyone really say for sure whether or not they'd leave their beloved home to go willingly into a journey that would most likely lead to pain, distraught, fear, and possibly death? Why leave your comfort zone? True, you want to protect your home, but could you really leave it? I honestly don't know what I'd do in that situation and unless such a situation presents itself to me, I don't think I've ever really know for sure.

If to be realistic I would freak out . No way I would have gone to that Mt.Doom . But maybe if I would not know the meaning of this quest maybe I would have gone just for fun at the begining . No use of me would my company have for I could not stab or kill more than 3-4 orcs during an attack not to meanchion that they would have to talk me to come down from trees time after time . I would love to think that I would go. But who can know what they'd do in a situation like that? I'd probably have gone as far as Rivendell and decided I liked it too much to go any farther. Then again, I base my decision knowing what happened on the Quest-Frodo, on the other hand, had no idea what would happen. Maybe if I didn't know what would happen I'd be more inclined to go.

I wuold have gone... Except they would have ahd to drag me kicking and screaming through Moria. Then i would have followed Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, as they had the more exciting journey.. in my opinion. I would have, however, gone through the Paths of the Dead without trouble... i am just a strange person.

I give this wonderful piece of work as an example. If I was a soldier in time of war, that poem would inspire me to rise above my fears and my restraints to fight with valour and with strength to defend my family and my people.

Your humility is to be commended. But I would like to offer encouragement on your behalf. If we were to truly think about it, virtually none of us could have successfully participated in the quest no matter how appealing and exciting it may
sound and no matter how much we may desire to fight for good. You are right, very few of us are skilled fighters and many of us have grown soft in today's culture (at least compared to the members of the fellowship). But, we have not been raised in the same manner as we would have been if Middle Earth existed. If we had lived in Middle Earth, no doubt many of us would be trained to various degrees in warfare. And those of us who had a thirst for adventure or who had strong convictions about fighting against evil would definitely train themselves so that they would be qualified for such a quest. Likewise, if a quest were to be undertaken in today's world with access to the same technology that made us "soft," many of us could undertake a similar, modern quest.

Also, think of the hobbits. Although most of them did not know what they were getting into, they volunteered and were allowed to participate in the quest because of their friendship for one another. Truly, Elrond's council knew that the hobbits would have been of little worth in battle and in council. But they were permitted to join the fellowship. And the reason why I think they were allowed to do so was because of their heart and their motives. The hobbits cared for each other. The kind of character that they showed (and the kind of character that is shown through abstaining from a quest because you feel you'd bog your friends down) is worth much more than ability and knowledge. Take Sam. He was a gardener - totally unskilled in combat. But through his devotion and love for Frodo, the quest was completed. Without Sam, the ring wouldn't have been destroyed. And that is Tolkien's point. You don't need to be a hero and you don't need to be a warrior or a wise person to change the world. All you
need is to love your fellow man and do good.

I agree with Gamgie on most things. I too love the middle ages and have made it one of my personal studys. I would have gone with Frodo if only to help ease his burden as Sam did. I would also give alot to hvave been in Eowyns, place even to go though all she did i would have done it. The adventure of it all sounds so great, winning honor in foreign lands, fighting for the side of good, it's just all so appealing. So yes, I would in fact have gone on the Ring Bearer's quest, and would have loved every second of it(except for the parts with monsters and dark scary places, and i probably wouldn't enjoy any prospect of danger, but hey, it's all part of the adventure). </p>

And, another point, equally as sad, is that no, I would not have gone with the Fellowship, given the choice. I have neither the courage nor the strength that it would have taken to go on such a demanding quest. Most likely, I would have hindered the company anyway, hopefully, for their sake, dying early on to spare them my companionship. If you think about it, although we dream of romantic quests such as that, most of us would not be equipped for an ordeal such as the one the nine companions went on. We have our televisions, airplanes, air-conditioning, cars, and all those other conveniences that have made us soft these days. I am sure there are some out there that could undertake the quest, but I know that I, for one, am a product of my generation and would never be able to survive the trek to Mount Doom or anywhere else dangerous, most likely. I like to think that I would have left in an instant to protect the land and people I love, but it's actually leaving the people and land I love that's the problem. Could anyone really say for sure whether or not they'd leave their beloved home to go willingly into a journey that would most likely lead to pain, distraught, fear, and possibly death? Why leave your comfort zone? True, you want to protect your home, but could you really leave it? I'd probably have gone as far as Rivendell and decided I liked it too much to go any farther. Then again, I base my decision knowing what happened on the Quest-Frodo, on the other hand, had no idea what would happen. Maybe if I didn't know what would happen I'd be more inclined to go.
