Numenor

I just read that Andor measured some 167,961 square miles, according to Fonstad's Atlas. Land of Gift indeed! If this indeed were true that would make it approximately the size of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia combined!
How did she come up with that figure, and is it accurate?

Elmo has just left Hobbiton.
There's a description of Numenor in The Unfinished Tales but I'm not sure what it said at this moment. Even if I knew I probably couldn't work out the square miles of it as all the talk of 'leagues' confuses me, I'm bad enough at Maths as it is.

A league is approximately 3 miles.

Unfinished Tales has a chapter named A Description of The Island of Numenor where its states that Numenor "resembled in outline a five-pointed star, or pentangle, with a central portion some two hundred and fifty miles across, north and south, and east and west, from which extended five large peninsular promontories."[/i] This is the narrowest distances across the island according to the map and its scale of miles. Using this map, one could work out the distance of the shoreline and get an approximation of the total square mileage. The 167,961 seems to be rather specific though.
