Ring Galadriel's Powers

What do you think was Galadriel's power?
I mean, we all know she had her ring, but it served her the protect her land.

But what if someone will attack her personally,
how can she defendfight better than others, after all she is considered "Powerful".

and also, why would the one ring enhance her power so much? she is no Maia or anything...just an elf.

Re: Galadriel's Powers

I dont think you can be sure what Galadriel would do if she was in Battle. The attack on Dul Guldur is the only time it ever said she had been in battle (as far as I know). But I suppose she would weild a sword and a sheild just like any other Elven Warrior.. maybe a bow for long range combat.

I dont know about any kind of 'magic' though.

Re: Galadriel's Powers

It said that in the attack on Dol Guldur Galadriel tore down the walls- of a fortress of Sauron! So she can rip down stuff- pretty impressive if you ask me

The destruction of Dol Guldur is in Appendix B, RoTK.

Quote:
.....when the Shadow passed, Celeborn came forth and led the host of Lórien over Anduin in many boats. They took Dol Guldur, and Galadriel threw down its walls and laid bare its pits, and the forest was cleansed.

Re: Galadriel's Powers

Before to much is made of it note that Luthien was only able to do so after gave her mastery of the tower, and Galadriel only after the destruction of the Ring (though with what that implies to her as well) and Sauron's fall.

Well, it's a darn good abilety to be able to overthrow walls.

But what bugs me: What would happen if an Orc would charge her and she was alone. You know, she never caried around weapons, so she should have a way to defend herself. What was that?

I think it says she took part in the first Kinslaying, though I'm not sure. If she did, it's obvious she could wield a sword and protect herself. I doubt thousands of years of *relatively* peaceful ruling would have diminished those abilities...

According to Tolkien Galadriel fought in defense of her Telerin kin at Alqualonde. He also describes her as a bit of an amazon, at least in her youth, rather like her cousin Aredhel. I guess all those brothers gave both ladies a tomboy streak.

JRRT was trying to create a myth and in myths there are always questions left unanswered for the readers to wonder about. Unanswered questions are some of best and worst parts about JRRT's works because the reader will always be wondering about the unsolved mysteries. That could be a good thing or a bad thing.

The power and magic of the elves is one such mystery that can never be truly solved by substantial evidence. There's only speculation.

Atleast that's my take on it. If any of you know better than I do, please feel free to correct me.

Well, Galadriel is the keeper of Nenya....the Ring of Adament also known as the Ring of Water. Therefore it is my opinion that she can call upon the land itself(or water...but perhaps that has more to do with her mirror)to defend her.

I'm beginning to see a pattern in your posting Arwen Melian

No, the ring did not have the power to alter earth or water. Someone been watching too much captain planet?

It did not posses the power to, I don't know, buildt up a rock wall in front of her to block a sword or anything. I think she could defend herself like gandalf's staff. Knock people out with a swoop of her arm. I think her power was also mental.

Olorin: We know that some things are left unanswered, that is why we are here. To discuss and debathe, to find the answers in the little things. Nothing was left unanswered, there were always little hints on the answers and thanks to a lot of downers, many things that were a mystery, have been cleared.

One thing for sure, I doubt Galadriel could do *magic* tricks like Gandalf. And the Elven Rings were made to preserve, not to destroy.
I guess in war she would depend upon her skill and upon her soldiers.
If she fought for the Teleri, how could she have joined the Noldorin host later? Sorry, it's been a long time since I last read Sil..

Well, you can hide a lot of things under a dress. Just ask Maikadilwen, Durelin or Amanaduial the Archer.

You have quite a sense Helkahothian, this is for you "captain planet he's a hero!" No I am not going to sing it . I relly did't mean it that way. Can you picture Galadriel holding out her hand with Nenya , cying "water!" That would be sad and scary.

I think as for magic, elves define it differently. Luthien was a tremendous minstrel, who could put Morgoth himself under with her song. Fingon battles Sauron in a tune. Perhaps Galadriel could rend the stone of the walls with a song that spoke against them. Words are powerful in ME. Gandalf's magic seems to be partially word-activated. What Galadriel did probably wouldnt be magic to elves, but to us it certainly would be!

Oh dear, I just had a mental picture of Gandalf crying out "Fire," Galadriel "Wind!" Elrond "Wind!" It's a very funny mental picture!

I think that Galadriel was fully capable of defending herself, she just didn't need to. After all, one who fought against Feanor (and his sons) during the Kinslaying (and survived!) has to have been one pretty powerful warrior indeed. It is also said that Galadriel "was a match for the athletes and the loremasters of the Noldor in their youth." That doesn't seem like the kind of thing that you can easily forget.

After all, she had loads of men around to defend her, and she didn't even have to lift a finger. Galadriel spoke, they all served. Isn't that every girl's dream?

That would be horrible. Not even that, it would also be quite pathetic. Tolkien would have gone into a very low place if would have done that. I think that Galadriel carried a weapon in those days.

Yeah, it would be every girls dream. Faye has one warrior though. So does Maikadilwen. If they would combine their powers, they would have an army of two soldiers. Hm, I hope they snap their fingers.

But I think that in that time, Galadriël carried a weapon.
