Oh, boy..."ranger" was the occupation I was thinking of, and I didn't know "king" was in there.....eep.

There is only one more word. It's the name of one of the members of the original Fellowship.

Nope. All of the words in this are together. There are no separated letters. Since you folks are probably tired of this one, though, here's a (bit of) hint: This Fellowship member was not human.

I am close to doing something I never, ever, ever do - give up!
I can't find anyone in there...
I expect it will be either Legolas or Gimli, because most of the words are to do with Rohan, but nowhere can I see them!

Well, thanks, I think I'll take it myself (although I did have it considerably easier, what with going first)

Ok; the following passage will contain ten words. They could be from any source, but are specific terms for Tolkien's inventions only -- I think all people or places -- not simply English words that feature in the books ('ring', for example, will not be allowed, although 'Treebeard' would as it is a specific translaion that refers to a specific thing). If you find one that I didn't know about (Rohan or Roan, for example) then you can have a bonus point . If the sound of the letters you have found resembles something, then chances are it is a good guess.

The man, wearing a coat of thin material -- a purple iridescent washed with blue dye -- looked around him before striding into the field. His eyes were dull, mostly dark blue but with a slight yellow in the inner circle.

The tree that had stood there, in time far ago on the top of a mound, had had an 'ethel' branch grafted onto it that had caused it to collapse. The hulk was now covered with ringed colonies of moulds and fungi that had turned it snow-white. Trees, left dead like this, can stay solid for many years; however this one looked like collapsing quickly.

The wind blew through the man's course hair as he stooped to look at what lay on this log. The rotten bark was black, but a still blacker eel lay snugly in a crack. The man's eyes opened wider.....

Some of these may be rather tricky. I might give a small clue: the very last word in the passage is the hardest to find. Or at least it should be.

You've got four. Manwe, Ulmo, White Tree and Entwash are all correct -- I'm afraid Tulkas isn't. (There are no split words, and all the letter sounds must be present.)

All the letter sounds must be present....not necessarily the letters?

Then do these count:

"far ago on"....Aragorn.

"Course hair".....Corsair.

"had had an ethel...Adanedhel (Elf-Man, one of Turin's names)

Yes, they're correct. So we've got seven:

-Ulmo
-Aragorn
-Adadedhel
-Entwash
-White tree
-Corsair
Three more (that I know of)

"there, in time" yeilds Erinti the archaic Valier.

Bit of a stretch but I find:

'slight yellow' becomes 'slight yeller' fairly easily, from which one can get tyeller the word for 'grades' in the Elvish Alphabet.

At last, someone's got it. Well done Annunfuiniel. (As you perhaps realised, all the words were whole in my passage, and also all stretched over two or in one case three consecutive words with no interruptions). Can't tell you how glad I am that that's over .

As Annunfuiniel, Saucepans, Eruanna, Sophia, Horse-maiden, and Doom-vegetable were all the contributors, either one of you may go next.

Phonetical, my dear Wise-man. It will probably help to read them aloud, and I did include clues in the sentences themselves. And oddly enough, I didn't even notice 'earth' when I created this. Luckly it has absolutely nothing to do with the answer (clue or otherwise).
