Yes, he was,

Gollum was already in Moria when the Fellowship discovered him. In fact, according to what I have seen on this site, according to Tolkien, he was in dire straits trying to escape friom the orcs that helped him esacpe from the Mirkwood elves. My guess (and you will find many arguments) is that he crawled out of one of the air shafts that Gimli and Gandalf talked about, thus pursuing them to the borders of Lothlorien,

Gollum would have already had to have been in Moria if the doors collapsed on the Fellowship. Unless by some chance Gollum was with the company when the doors caved in . Either that Gollum began tunelling through the fallen stone.

Actually, Gollum was in the custody of the Mirkwood Elves until he escaped with the help of some Orcs. That escape is what brought Legolas to Imladris in the first place. Problem is, (for the Orcs) that Gollum escaped from them some time between being freed from Mirkwood and when the Fellowship arrived in Moria, Presumably, he escaped after they brought him to Moria (which seems to be where they were from.) At any rate, Tolkien said in one of his letters, (please don't ask me which one, I don't know) that Gollum was in trouble and looking for an escape westward when he stumbled on the Fellowship headed East. If they hadn't headed through Moria, he probably would have starved to death. The real question is, what kind of parrellel did Tolkien have in mind between the Fellowship saving Gollum's life (accidentally) and losing Gandalf's life in the same place. Do I smell the most obvious opportunity for redemption that this story ever provided. (Notice I say story not Novel, out of respect to Fordim's "structure" thread.)

Lindolirian has just left Hobbiton.
The Unfinished Tales also speculates that he hid in Moria when the some of Nazgul rode in the Vale of Anduin on their way as they searched for the Ring and joined up with their Captain.

Apparently, the elves at Mirkwood treated young Gollum with much kindness and were careful, and then the boyo escaped because they let him climb a tree... oh dears, you never know with that Gollum do you?
