I noticed yesterday it had come up [ seemingly] w/ out anyone editing or posting.
I thought maybe it was some admin command.

I decided to check it again to see if our Cheifwight had mentioned anything about the Silm. posting protocols

Ha! Thought you could slip a Star Wars quote by me?! Ben is a great man!

That's the strange part -- when I clicked into this section, there it was, about fourth down on the list, quite randomly.

Note the generic "Administrator" and "Registered User" titles. Fascinating!

lindil, since you e-mailed me about such my main comp has been non-functional and I haven't been able to get into my e-mail to reply. I don't remember the entire gist of your message and didn't want to reply until I could get back in and read it thoroughly. But perhaps your remark will suffice. Take care of it as you see fit. archeology

Know your history, folks! Up goes the thread which was already labeled 'this old fossil' as far back as February 2001

I have strong suspisions as of this particular thing being the very first post of the very first thread on the BD fora, and what with having the fourth birthday of those celebrated just the previous week, let it be exhibited for the awestruck crowds to gape at!

Silmaril Hooray!

HerenIstarion, I must say you always somehow dig up the best instances of "old fossils." Good job finding the first post in the first thread in the entire discussion forum! What a gem!

Goodness, I wasn't even around until two years later (almost exactly!) and I feel as though I've been here forever. BW must feel ancient, being here twice as long!

What about me? I haven't even been here 6 months. Now, not a day goes by without logging in. This is probably the most addictive web page there is.

Hmmm... Whar was I doing four years ago? *wonders*

Interesting. I'm going to assume that the first post was made after the Downs moved from EZBoard? A while back, someone surfaced with a link to the old, EZBoard forum. It was very neat; I should try to find it again and link it here. It was great seeing how different it was, yet creepy at the same time to see the Downs so deserted.

[EDIT] Aha! Found it! Ancient Barrow-Downs!

Eep... that's scary... seeing the Downs like that... I mean, come on... the LOGO doesn't even glow yet... and... it's... well... EMPTY! Just like in Tolkien's world...

At least the moderator names are familiar.

Hmmm... where was I four years ago... Oh, I REMEMBER! I was watching the Phantom Menace! The one think I can recall from four years ago, is watching Star Wars for the first time. I'd never heard of the Hobbit, let alone Lord of the Rings... for crying out loud, I was only ten back then... I'm scared now!

I suppose EZboards, and Proboards are where good boards begin then, I still find it hard to believe that the Barrow-downs began as an EZboard! And look at them now!

Silmaril Now that's scary.

So that's how The Downs originally looked like. Suddenly I've remembered the forum in UBB. Sigh...memories...

I should have joined the forum the first time I've heard about The Barrow-Downs... more than three years ago.

Here's a bit of Downs history for you. There's every reason to think that this was the first thread ever started: an old campaigner which bears the scars of two changes of forum software and nearly seven years of posting.

Heren Istarion bumped this up back in May 2004, so since it's about time it was seen again I've followed suit. Enjoy.

7 years is a long time...

I like all those symbols and font codes that go along with every sentence in the old posts... how very Stone Age that seems now...

Looking through the ancient scrolls of the Barrow-Downs, I see user Michael Martinez. Did the Downs spawn this famous author?
