If you were to have 6 teeth they would most likly be quite spaced out. So how is it possible for gollum to bite off frodo's finger?

Heh, I think my picture of gollum on my page is more fit for the job ;P

Re: Can you bite off somones finger with 6 teeth?

Good question. I'm guessing he snapped Frodo's finger off with a combination of 6 rotten teeth and a very strong jaw/gum. That gollum on your site could have snapped Frodo's arm off

Re: Better to be safe than sorry

I can't take credit for it but back in the Annals of the Downs someone or other postulated something akin to this bite pattern:

________
\/ \/\/ \/
_/\__/\__

Now that I look at it though, maybe it was more like:

______
\/\/\/
_/\/\/\_

Well, he was pretty old, and he didn't have good dental care. By that time you would expect a normal human to not have any. As for bite patter, I think think anything that even works slightly would be fine.

True.. I personally never thought of gollums teeth as sharp fangs though.. I always thought he had a few incisors and maybe an eye tooth or two Maybe I was wrong..

Hey maybe thats why he hissed. But really, gollums life was extended by the ring so maybe that means that he only lost a few by bumbing around in the dark or thinking that a staglitite was food or maybe he was caught once stealing from some house or market who knows? Oh by the way Gollum where is your website? I wanna see the picture of Gollum, see if he could bite of Frodo's arm.

Re: Can you bite off somones finger with 6 teeth?

Gollum kept a stone with which he sharpened his teeth. All six were thus quite suited for their work!

I thought that gollum just kinda latched onto the finger with his teeth, but actually removed it by kinda just wrenching it out of it socket (sounds painful, huh?)

He says it when he's talking to Sam doesn't he- man I gotta carry around my books so I can be more accurate. I dont recall a it about a teeth-sharpening stone though...

Gollum tells how many teeth he has in The Hobbit. He says he only has six after the riddle where the answer was teeth.

Also The Hobbit, after Bilbo's "riddle" about what he has in his pockets:
Quote:
"S-s-s-s-s," said Gollum more upset than ever. He thought of all the things he kept in his own pockets: fishbones, goblins' teeth, wet shells, a bit of bat-wing, a sharp stone to sharpen his fangs on, and other nasty things. He tried to think what other people kept in their pockets.

I think that even without teeth The Greed to get the r*** was so great that he wouldn`t have had a problem biting it off just with his gums.

Gollum-boy had to chew hard orkish meet most of his life. He wouldn't live that long without sharp teeth (no matter the Ring). Raw fish may be something softer, but I'm not sure I could do it with my all healthy teeth, so he's a sorta HERO!!!

I'm with Nightwalker on this one. Regardless of how many teeth he had, it was the desperation to get the ring which gave Gollum the ability to get the finger off. And sharpening stones make things sharp for cutting and slicing, whereas to get through bone you need an edge and a bit of force (like a cleaver). Gollum certainly had a strength greater than his small frame suggested. The existence of the stone is well remembered but beside the point.

I think desperation drove him to it in the end-he would have had a go even if he didn't bite off the whole finger. i think the stone was useful but that was many years ago-when he met Bilbo. since then he was probably practicing through catching animals etc when slinking about after Frodo. He was just lucky. (or unlucky, whichever way you look at it.)
