So, lets look at it so far. What is the status of our Vehicles in the Challenge?

Mount Zoom = Not Done.

Bag Endless-fuel = Not Done.

Orth-Tank = Done. Troll Eaten by Evil Hamsters. (Going South West)

Barad-Dash = Done. Troll squished by fake eye. (Going South West)

Medul-zoom = Done. Troll killed by Evil Beast in rabbit form. (South West)

Minas Mor-go = Done. Troll Killed by Tra-la-lally Elves.

Minas Taxi = Done. Troll turned to stone. (Going West)

As soon as everyone is done, I'll open the voting. Watch this space, folks!

Actually, we're not done. Gandalf uncloaking in front of the Troll occured only (and reluctantly) in Frodo's vivid imagination. Caranlondien will hopefully be posting the second instalment of our challenge resolution, together with our proposed direction, later today.

As a reminder, here's how the side challenge betting works- you lay down a certain ammount of points. If you win, you get the points back with the odds on them. If you lose, you lose the points with the odds in effect. (If you bet 10 points on 6-1 odds, you'll win or lose 60 points.) I'm actually about to rework the odds, so I'll be back with that soon.

That's why I could not get my vote in. I would have cast it, but I just didn't have the time. This was the first time I was able to get onto a computer all day. I'll try and send it earlier next time if possible.

I hate to be too querulous (actually, no I don't, I just pretend to), but wouldn't it make more sense if a loss resulted in the loss only of the original, unadjusted point value? That's the way it works in horse racing. Under the stated system, betting for a long shot is extraordinarily unwise, even if you believe the odds to be significantly better than given. E.g. the average net gain on a 6:1 shot at 10 points would be -50 points!

Might I suggest a more Tolkienian name than points?

I would bet with castar, a sort of Gondorian coin. They're mentioned briefly in Peoples of Middle-earth, on page 45.

Can players bet? Or is that akin to proffesional sports coaches betting?

Given that you aren't allowed to vote for yourselves, it seems fairly unlikely that you would be able to fix the race. (I'm not accepting lays- that is, bets that a certain team will lose, and I trust that you're actually trying to win.) After all, we can vote for the people we bet on, you can do the same. Unless you bet on yourself, in which case, never mind.

And just to remind everyone, betting on challenges and betting on the over all outcome are two seperate things. You can bet on different teams for each. The over all race doesn't have any actually betting- that is you don't stand to lose anything, but if you win, Hookbill promised to rep you.

But, I'll see what I can do.

Anyway.

The first challenge was a learning experience, so after Glirdan’s comments (and bruises to my head) I'll extend the time frame. This time there is no actual limit on the posting for the second challenge, but I'd like them all done by tomorrow ish.

The voting will be begin, as usual, when the final vehicle has passed the challenge. I'll close it the following morning (probably). We'll see what happens.

I'll figure out another reward for the side challenge winners. The point was that there's nothing really to bet on the race. Everyone just picks who they think will win the RACE, and you rep the ones that are right.

They're mentioned briefly in Peoples of Middle-earth, on page 45. Can players bet? Or is that akin to proffesional sports coaches betting?
