Eye what's Sindarin for "shut up" or "be quiet"?

I'm working on learning Sindarin, but I can't find something the equivilant of "shut up". I really want to find out, it's SO satisfying to tell your siblings something in Elvish and have them go "huh?".

I'd appreciate it if anybody knew the answer to this or a place where I could find it.

Suilad Elrowen,
the best place to learn Sindarin is www.councilofelrond.com they have a very good sindarin course and the mods will mark your work/give pointers and there are those willing to mentor people...

the closest I can get for you is be silent which is:
Avo pedo or No dínen (both lit: Silence!)

Or for a little extra how about:
Mîbo orch! (go kiss an orc!)

I'm no elvish expert, but you can use U as a negative prefix. Maybe you could say Uquen or Uquet or something to mean silence

In ME-mirth, in the topic "Elvish Insults" someone said that shut up would be u-bedo. That might be Quenya though, I'm not sure.

Also another good place to go to learn elvish is ardalambion.com.

U-bedo is Sindarin. I use it for "shut up", but the literal meaning is "don't talk".

Oh, and Adastrea, where did you find how to say "go kiss an orc"? Just curious.

As per Quendi and Eldar, HoME XI, 4:
Quote:
4(a) ego! 'be off!' This is from *hek(e) a: a the imperative
particle, being originally independent and variable in place,
survived in S as o > o, though this now always followed the
verb stem and had become an inflexion.
4(b) eitha-. This is in the main a derivative of PQ *ek-ta,
and means 'prick with a sharp point', 'stab'; but the sense
'treat with scorn, insult' (often with reference to rejection or
dismissal) may show the effect of blending with PQ *hek-ta.
To say to anyone ego! was indeed the gravest eithad.

Suilad Sapphire Flame! Yes I must now confess to being Elvish mad! I learnt go kiss an orc at the council of Elrond and not quite believing my eyes had to go and pour through the Sil, LOTR, HoME, my attested sindarin dictionary (downloaded from fellowship of the wordsmiths)to find it was right! Yeah I would not reccomend any other learn Elvish sites except for Ardalambion for Quenya and COE for Sindarin...(COE also has links to some older sites that are good...can't remember them all off the top of my head...)

Could be in Quenya... not sure, though.

A word of advice: NEVER, and I mean NEVER go to thegreycompany.net for Elvish. It's some weird hybrid of Quenya and Sindarin, or something. It's just bad Elvish.

And to agree with Horse-Maiden, NEVER NEVER NEVER go to thegreycompany.net. It's really a horrible site and can really screw you up with the real languages. Use Fellowship of the Word-smiths, Ardalambion, and Council of Elrond.

Mae govannen! It is the most satisfying thing to go around telling people to shut-up in elvish...you have no idea of the satisfaction it gives you when you say that and they get the most clueless look on their face...Ok, enough gloating. I'm pretty sure that the elvish translation for "shut-up" is "stille nu"...actually the litteral translation is "be quiet", but it still means the same thing, right? I'm not sure if it is Quenya or sinardin but it still works...Namarie

Well, I know a little elvish, and I can help you!

You can say "Dina!" which means "be quiet/be silent" but I much prefer other insults...here are a few of my favorites:

"Auta miqula orqu!" (go kiss an orc!)
"Lle holma ve'edan!" (you smell like a human!)
"Lasta lalaithamin!" (listen to my laughter!)
"Dolle naa lost!" (your head is empty!)

And the best one is...

"Llie n'vanima ar' lle atara lanneina!"

(you're ugly and your mother dresses you funny!)

If you want some more, check out this site, it has great info, but I think some of it is a mix of Sindarin and Quenya, but it stays pretty close and it's organized really well:

ACK! ACK! Grelvish alert! Never, ever use grey company elvish here! It is insulting and demeaning.

Oh, and "Abedithon le" means "I'll talk to you later". SO....

I think thegreycompany.net is a form of Elvish which their 'group' adapted from the works of Tolkien for their role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons.

I just realised the Elvish Insults thread is gone...

Anyway, has anyone got a translation for "Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"?
