Joy has just left Hobbiton.
Nimrodel

Last night, as I was re-reading the Chapter "Lothloríen" I came across Legolas's reciting of Nimrodel. The whole time I was reading this, I could not but help think of "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers.

Maybe it's the part, "Lonely rivers flow
To the sea, to the sea To the open arms of the sea. Lonely rivers sigh Wait for me, wait for me I'll be coming home Wait for me."

It just seems that both have a finality and a sense of doom to them. Unrequited love longing for the one they cannot reach. Hey, at least "Endless Sleep" ends better.

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

Just thought of something. "Endless Sleep" is more like the story of Beren and Lùthien.

yes but perhaps if it's eternal rest with someone we love...well, I think I could be happy

Ah, l'amour! I know what you mean, Legolas' song sounds so.... heartbreaking. I've never heard the song you're referring to, but I'm sure it fits.

Here are the words for Unchained Melody.

Quote:
Oh, my love, my darling, I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time.

Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much, Are You Still Mine?

I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me!

Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea, To the open arms of the sea.

Lonely rivers sigh, "Wait for me, wait for me!" I'll be coming home, wait for me!

Oh, my love, my darling, I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time

Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much, Are You Still Mine?

I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me!

Lonely mountains gaze at the stars, at the stars, Waiting for the dawn of the day.

All alone, I gaze at the stars, at the stars, Dreaming of my love for away.

Oh, my love, my darling, I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time.

Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much, Are You Still Mine?

I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me!
Here are the words of Endless Sleep
Quote:
The night was black rain fallin' down
I looked my baby she's no where aroun'
Chased her footsteps down to the shore
Afraid she's gone for ever more

Well I looked at the sea, seemed to say
I took your baby from you away
I heard a voice cry in the deep
Come join me baby in my endless sleep

Why did we quarrel why did we fight
Why did I leave her alone last night
That's why her foot steps ran down to the sea
That's wy my baby has gone from me

Well I looked at the sea seemed to say
I took your baby from you away
Well I heard a voice cry in the deep
Come join me baby in my endless sleep
Endless sleep

Out in the water heart full of fear
There in the breaker I saw her near
Reached for my darlin' held her to me
Dragged her away from the angry sea

Well I looked at the sea seemed to say
I took your baby from you away
I heard a voice cryin' in the deep
I took your baby from the endless sleep
I grabbed my baby from the endless sleep
I know that this doesn't exactly fit Lùthien and Beren's story, but it's close.

Does anyone have other songs that remind them of ME?

Maybe this should be moved to Novices and Newcomes, Esty. I posted this many months back.

A song that reminds me of Tolkien's works? Led Zeppelin's "The Battle of Evermore." It does help that the song actually mentions the Ringwraiths.
